and there's still no way to lead a good life even with the little bump in the minimum wage. You could double that number and it still doesn't give you much of anything..
Then it's time to make an investment with yourself. The excuse that you can not afford college is insane. With financial aid, anyone can do it. Yes, you may have student loans, but that's known as a "good" debt to have and you get incentitives down the line.

actually.. I had to apply for financial aid when I signed up for school and I wasn't even in the ball park for qualifying.. Luckily for me it didn't matter because the VA is paying for it through the Vocational Rehabilitation program. It would be pretty tough to afford over $40K worth of school in less than three years though.
BTW, I wasn't saying I had a problem with income and am making Much more this year than I was last year. The problem I had was the pay out there as a normal civilian (in San Antonio) just isn't what it takes. Good case in point would be when I went from Rackspace to my contracting job. Both are IT related and quite similar, but the contractor job paid almost double.. When I finish my degree and hopefully get a job with the new NSA (or one of the other) data centers then I hope to double the income again.. or become a pretty high up GS and kick back on Easy Street..

BTW2, "good debt" is still debt. I'd prefer to have no debt, that's a really good thing..
