I was driving thru DTSA one Friday night a month back, and was supprised by all the little clubs down Houston street and Alamo...SouthTown. lots of young folk walking around.

DTSA is usually pretty dead on street level. River level dif story

N. St. Mary's Street from 281 to Josephine was once San Antonio's "6th Street", with wall-to-wall bars. The area went into decline in the early-to-mid 90s due to crime and neighborhood complaints about bar patrons relieving themselves in front yards, vandalizing cars, etc. However, St. Mary's has experienced a real resurgence in the last couple years and is now home to many more restaurants, coffeehouses, some bars, music venues, lots of art galleries, and many community-driven events.

N. St. Mary's Street is a really cool place to hang out, with a lot less of the late-night puking that you see on 6th Street in Austin. Do a forum search and you'll find several posts listing all the venues in the area (Tobin Hill neighborhood, Pearl Brewery complex, N. St. Mary's).

SA is a huge party town but it's more about festivals than bars. We also don't usually close streets except for carnivals and parades.

The Riverwalk/downtown and St Marys are the main places you could walk from club to club, but there are clusters of bars and little "strips" all over town.

The weekly free magazine THE CURRENT has extensive club and event listings.

There's a small cluster of bars/clubs in the Stone Oak area you want bar hop, and the Broadway area.

I don't think you can even put Stone Oak in the same category as 6th street in Austin. Not at all the same. Stone Oak is very yuppie, upper middle class, suburban housewives type of thing, IMO. I would say the downtown area is a little closer. Houston street is about as close as you are going to get in my opinion. Of course, I can't picture where all of the bars and coffee shops are on St. Marys.

The clubs and/or bars are scattered throughout the city. If you are looking for a place to walk from one to another the best place is the downtown riverwalk, which can also offer restaurants and a spectacular view of the riverwalk.

Since I did graduate from UT Austin and worked in Austin for a few years I most definitely know this. I'm just giving the OP some ideas of where he can bar hop around without driving. And I don't know any locals who go downtown to the riverwalk to bar hop, it's all tourists. Houston street did have a nice little block of bars/clubs, but only one or two remain.

Chicago Bar, Cross-eyed Seagull, Celito, Grotto, Duo, and Luz (think it's called Next Door Bar now), are all at the same intersection in Stone Oak.
