The move from Ashburn to SA could be very good for you, but you didn't mention if you have a family (I assume you do, since you're in Ashburn) or what kind of jobs you'll be looking for. You will definitely get more house for your money in San Antonio and there is a slower pace of life. I also think the schools in SA are good, with some better than others.

I moved back to NOVA after living and working in San Antonio for almost three years. I missed NOVA's dynamic economy, the better pay, the challenging work and the diverse culture of the Washington area. However, I'm single and don't have a burning desire to own a big home. I put a premium on having an interesting job and a wide variety of entertainment and travel options.

I made some very good friends in San Antonio and enjoyed my life while I was there. I hated the low pay and incessant summer heat! I hope you'll visit the city and try to meet prospective employers. I think this is the best way to make up your mind.
