If you want an area that has those type of houses so that your house will fit in, I would suggest Alamo Heights, or Mahncke Park. I know that they have crafstman style houses. Depending on your budget, there are houses for sale that you can tear down and use the lot. Also, there are lots for sale in the area.

Dignowity Hill. There are some nice lots available too; we're just a few blocks from downtown; if it ever stopped raining, I could walk to the Alamo from my house. Since I'm a realtor I'm not allowed to post links so I'll send you a DM with link to a blog with pics of the neighborhood.

There's also Lavaca not too far from Dignowity and several other neighborhoods where your house would fit right in.

I don't think you can do a complete tear down in Alamo Hts anymore. Not sure about Mahncke Park or Dignowity Hill. There are lots available. For residential land in Alamo Hts, expect to pay somewhere between $25-$30 per square foot.

There are some craftsman style homes in the Southeast area of S.A. around South New Braunfels/HEB Plus. Perhaps you can find a lot in there. Good luck!

I just moved into an old craftsman in Beacon Hill (alta vista). I love it - there are so many craftsman style homes there. I know they do tear down homes in the area so there should be places you could build if you don't want to go the restoration route.
