Ill try to help you with that one, Try NEISD around that Randolph AFB area. It's right up the road on 35 from Fort Sam, great schools and plenty of housing.

Wow,
That's a little more difficult question now than it was when we got transferred here in 2000. I agree that NEISD is the best SA school district and it's within you're commuting range. It's the country setting, trying to think of the best schools in the the NEISD and knowing how the traffic patterns have changed over the years that's got me on this one. When we bought there was virtually nothing north of 1604 off Blanco except Camp Bullis. No Super Target and lots of wide open space. My husband could hop on 1604 and then take 281S and be down to work at Ft. Sam in 23 minutes (30 if it was rush hour). Fast forward to when he retired in 2005 and it was 45 minutes with knowing the shortcuts(35 if he went in really early).

My daughter attended NEISD schools and was in her first year at Reagan High School when we built our retirement home further out by Canyon Lake so now she is going to Smithson Valley. She loved Reagan and never had any trouble there. She is having a very hard time adjusting to Smithson Valley but that's a whole other story. I have heard stories about rampant drug use at every school in the city including Reagan (they say it's because the rich kids go there) but in the end it's more about what you're child is involved in and who their friends are. The school itself is academically excellent. Overall I feel my child has gotten a much better education here in San Antonio than she got in Oklahoma schools. And the schools must be doing something right because she always get commended level on her state testing scores.

As far as a "Country Feel" to where you want to live. I think you can get that anywhere north of 1604 between Blanco and I-35. Just don't go any further north than Evans or where Stone Oak Parkway comes out on 281N. Otherwise you'll run into too much traffic congestion.

Good luck...

The hardest thing about living around Military is you spend a lot of time crying because you become friends and then they move. UGH, it's hell to have to say goodbye to wonderful friends every few years.

I lived in Hawaii for 10 yrs and had to say good bye to so many dear friends

Hello SummersEven,

It sounds more like a mixed blessing or bittersweet issue. Without having relocated to there in the first place you'd not have met those wonderful dear friends, right?

Gen-brand new to Military

I'm right there w/ you SummersEve - I've been here three years and haven't made all that many friends - one left me last summer - and the other - whose my best friend down here and I've really grown to care about- is leaving me this August (I've been a bit depressed since she told me a couple of months ago). That's it - I'm not making friends with any more military wives (only half kidding on that).

I thought Lackland ISD was the best district in SA? Their scores are Always near 100% and tops in everything. I believe Army people can live on Lackland, but the wait is over a year, or at least when I was in it was.
If you don't want to live on base then NEISD or NISD are your two best choices IMO. I know that NISD is not good in every school, so you'll have to research the particular school the kids will be going to and also, if they're in middle school now, look at what high school. The NISD builds high schools faster than any place I've lived, so you also might want to look into how crowded that particular school is and what are the chances of it changing to another one.
