I have always heard that you should take a teaspoon of locally produced honey every day in order to fight off allergy problems. I moved here 21 years ago and had never had a day of allergy problems in my life--after being here about 3 years they kicked in. Cedar was the worst. However, I quit smoking 3 years ago, and knock wood--I really haven't had any recent problems. I've never done the honey thing, but I know several people who swear by it. Good luck!

Hi googie2525,

I'm just hoping that I don't develop the allergies (though I'm told that I will). Just moved here two and a half years ago. Please tell me, where is "River Road"? I've never heard of it.

I believe the only river road around is the one from New Braunfels to Canyon Lake dam that follows the river. The road crosses over the Guadalupe five times I beleive. It is very beautiful and one of my favorite drives in South Texas.

The River road in San Anotonio is by the Zoo. If you are traveling 281 to Broadway on Mulberry River Rd runs off of it by the park on your right hand side.

Yes, the "River Road" area is adjacent to Brackenridge Park, the Zoo, Sunken Gardens, etc. If you remember where the old horse stables used to be, it's right behind that. There was a large article about the neighborhood a year or so ago in the Express but I can't locate it, but basically it outlined how the small area is like an underhyped (as opposed to King William) oasis of liberalism and artsy types, and discussed the folks that llived there, a nice mix of writers, lawyers, politicos, all thrown in with regular ol' blue collar types, and how they like it that way. It's still pretty obscure though unless you're "tuned-in" to older (i.e., interesting?) areas of town. I do think though that it's a tad bit overpriced since it tends to flood there quite easily (being it's directly by the San Antonio River) and the older housing stock is fairly ramshackle compared to say, Monte Vista. It's an interesting area though, and really seems out of sync with the rest of San Antonio, you'll see what I mean if you cruise through. But I must say, if I was a true dyed-in-the-wool hippie, that's where I'd live...unless I was a filthy rich hippie, then I'd just truck it to King William and live in one of those million dollar mansions where I'd grow hemp in the backyard and tend to my chickens, ha. Cheers!

Here's a link to an article from the local SA newspaper a few days ago. San Antonio was rated the second-worst place in the US for an allergy sufferer to live by the allergy doctors professional organization. Austin was #1 (worst) on their list.
