Hiyas all. New to the San Antonio area, and have a question, or two about finding hard to food foodstuffs. I have a taste for the foods I grew up with in Trinidad/Tobago, so interested in finding stores I can purchse the ingredients.

Where could someone find the following: good selection of curry, saffron, roselle fruit(sorrell in trinidadian), hibiscus flowers/juice, turmeric, chick peas, tamarind, etc.. I am on the east side of town, so prefer to stay over here, but, if the place is worth it, will go anywhere. Thanks !

haven't been there yet but everyone raves about Central Market on Broadway in Alamo Heights, they say it has all the stuff you can't find anywhere else.

You can also try Las Americas Latin Market on San Pedro. I am also relatively new to the area also. I have found quite a number of things there that I couldn't find in the "regular" grocery store. I have Jamaican relatives and many PR/DR friends that I grew up with eating caribbean food in upstate NY.

Welcome to SA!!

i'll offer up my old standby suggestion, which is specs at 35/1604. a lot more exotic grocery items there (no produce if i remember correctly). i may also recomend one of the (very few) natural foods stores like whole foods or sun harvest, which seems to have a better selection of uncommon food items.

i am also told that depending on the neighborhood/area, some heb's will have a greater selection of various specialty/ethnic food items (a bigger kosher selection in jewish neighborhoods, etc). where those might be for indian/caribbean, i do not know.

i thought i saw once that sa had a/a few open stock spice stores, but i may have been mistaken. cn anyone confirm/deny that?

There's a few small Indian food stores scattered around, I know there's one on Fredericksburg Rd, but I don't remember what it's called. I can't really recommend it as I've only been inside once with a friend and I personally didn't buy anything, but it's worth checking out.
