Default Does anyone know what HEB corporate is like?

My husband is looking at taking a job there and we wanted to know what the corporate culture was like. He is looking for something that is not cutthroat competitive. We also like to have him home evenings and weekends. The HQ is downtown, correct?

The headquarters is located in the King William District south of downtown. A few friends of mine work there and rather enjoy it...they've never complained. H-E-B is a fantastic company to work for, especially if you're upper management.

adtobias, does your relative have children? Do you know if the company is family friendly? Women friendly? (I am thinking about applying as well.)

I have done contract work with HEB, and all my contacts so far (three main ones) have been women, so I figure they must be at least somewhat 'woman friendly' .

I have family who work in various levels at HEB, including Corporate, and have worked over in Planning and Design myself at one time. The culture is very family friendly and employee oriented. I really enjoyed both the great food at the cafeteria and the fitness center onsite. They used to have resort cottages on the coast that employees could reserve at no cost for vacations. Kinda rustic compared to condos, but still very nice, clean and comfortable.

As in any business operation there will be politics and some competition, but I never saw any that seems cutthroat or excessive in any stretch of the imagination. There are schedules and deadlines that have to be met, and a strong customer service ethic, so don't expect no pressure.

Also remember that this is a family business, so members of the family will seen a bit more favorable treatment than will the "common" employees

But even that is not excessive from what I could observe. The company does like to promote from within and takes care of it's own, so to speak. Many people have had entire careers there.

I worked there briefly. It's in a nice park-like setting, but that was no big deal in my opinion. You only saw that part of it during lunch hour, and, it was an enclosed private grounds so the only people you would see were your fellow HEB employees.

I have several friends who work at HEB HQ and they have (off the record) mixed reviews of the environment there. From a "family-friendly" standpoint, yes, it is that. However, if you are used to working in an environment that is world-class in its approach to the industry or that has development processes that make sense, you may be frustrated there. That said, if you're just looking for an admin type job, you'll probably be just fine.
