My husband went gator hunting last fall and is now threatening to hang the hide above our bed. He is also entertaining the idea of having boots made. So, in an effort to make sure this doesn't end up on my wall, I'd love to know if there was anywhere within 100 miles of SA that you can have boots made.

Mercedes is in the Valley - might be farther than you want to drive.

Yeah. Sorry about that. Mercedes is a bit far away. But with what she wants to do I figured wouldn't hurt to call them. If it saves enough money it may be worth the drive.

My uncle was a master boot maker for Lucheses Boot for over 50 years, he met, measured and made boots for all the old western stars like John Wayne, Gene Autry, 4 U.S. presidents, and various Kings from overseas...the list goes on and on. He has the photos to prove it and he has most of the wooden foot molds that he carves to make their boots signed by the celebtrity (there is a special name for them..I forget)

Bottom line skins and hides need to be preserved in certain ways for certain uses...from the begining or it drys out. I seriously doubt your husband would be able to use HIS alligator skin for his boots. I know all the skins my uncle had in his work shop were extremely soft...alike a chamois, no matter which animal it came from.

But check with boot makers and see what they can do with what you have.
