The latest list of the Top Schools in San Antonio as defined by the non-profit group Children At Risk has been published.

Since NEISD and NISD are usually thought of as pretty equivalent districts, I thought it was interesting how dominant NEISD schools are on these lists, especially at the Elementary and Middle School level.

Top 5 Middle Schools in Greater San Antonio Area
1. Natalia Junior High (Natalia ISD)
2. Jose M. Lopez Middle (North East ISD)

The criteria:

Children At Risk measured the success of middle and elementary schools based on indicators including 'commended' performance on TAKS, attendance rate, and retention rates to determine how well area schools are preparing their students for secondary and post-secondary success.

My son's middle school is not named, but he's a 'commended' performer on TAKS, goes to school every day unless very sick, and is in honors classes. Good enough for me.

The private schools are also left out... many of those are considerably better than the top public schools in the city.

your thread title and KMOL both omit the fact that the rankings are for "public" schools only.

My son is in kindergarten and goes to a 2nd grade reading class and is in the "gifted" program.

He was selected out of 70 kindergarteners in his school to read the lunch menu on TV, Fox35.

With 40,000+ people moving to the area every year, it's always handy for newcomers to have another resource like this.

Below is a link to the site that contains the original report, which has more details than the news story about the methodology behind the ranking.

The Express New's coverage of this report was just a bit better. It provides more details on how certain schools with a higher percentage of economically disadvantaged kids buck the trend and achieve high academic performance.
