I want to know what was in the purse.

Seriously.

There had to be more than money in there.

It's very doubtful that the idiot knew of anything in her purse, other than him assuming there was money. I think it was totally random, a crime of opportunity, and being the low-rent scumbag that he was, he took that opportunity. You know, cuz he ain't got no job and all.

I think funymann's comments were from the perspective of why she would go to such great lengths to chase the purse snatcher. Here is my take, the new airman was told to safeguard her DoD ID card and that may have been her motivation to recover her stolen purse. She had only been in the USAF a short while, having only completed basic and technical training; and during those periods it is highly stressed the importance of maintaining absolute security on this form of identification. Why? Because a stolen ID card could be used to illegally access the base.

Now, this is purely speculation on my part but I do offer it as a possible explanation. As a new airman, Vanessa Pitts reacted based on her training to safeguard her ID card. She wasn’t afforded the luxury of time to debate whether it could have been a dangerous move on her part, hers was an instinctive reaction that anyone with the same background and training would have made; and we can’t put blame on her for doing so. The entire incident and her death were the direct result of one person’s actions—Lorenzo Thompson—who is ultimately responsible whether he intended the outcome or not...

majormadmax, thank you. So many people have been blaming the victim here. I remember what basic training was like and how they stressed the importance of not losing your ID or orders. She was in transit to her first duty assignment. She probably had her orders in the purse as well as her ID. There would have been no way for her to report without those items. Vanessa was my cousin and a very wonderful person. She had a bright future ahead of her. This animal cut that life short. I was completely sickened by his comments when he was caught - claiming not to have known she was hurt. He intentionally rammed a car to try to shake her off. That was no accident and there was no way he could not have known that she was hurt. Our family appreciates those who try not to add insult to injury by blaming the victim.

So sorry about your family's loss.

About a year and half ago, a friend of our family was run over and killed and it was a difficult time for us.

May you have comfort in this time of need.

well...you bet your sweet dots that everyone is judging her now too! You can see how this mentality is bred into people....like stealing a purse was ok to begin with. If this STEP mother knew he would go out and steal something because of his "falling out", then why did she not prevent THAT. And "the lady" would be alive.

Yeah....I'm about to pop a blood vessel too. One wrong can't make a right...and she is asking for two! He has to suffer to consequences of his actions. People can forgive him all day long, but he cannot undo what he did. She doesn't get what it means to be a "Christian".....forgiveness does not always come without consequences for what was done. She'll be lucky if any of them get that much.

This was the first thing that came to my mind. I am so sorry for your loss. There just are no words that can come to mind about how complicated this is.
She obviously took her orders seriously. God rest her soul.

mnm617, you should know...San Antonio is a military town and this man is not receiving any sympathy or mercy. Regardless of what his stepmother asks for. Only your family's input and a jury's will matter in this. I am heartbroken for your family's loss and the Airforce's loss.

I'm retired Navy and I know all too well about guarding my ID with my LIFE. Nobody has the right to criticize her decision to protect hers. I'm a 40 year old disabled woman and I would probably have done the exact same thing.

The end result was terrible, but I can't help but respect her for fighting back.

**** this ******* will get some high dollar Lawyer and plead just that......He didn't intend upon killing / hurting this poor girl. Just like the Drunk Bastards who leave a bar and kill someone. These *******s get off since they entered the bar without intentions of becoming drunk, then getting into their car and killing someone.

People want to play the game but they don't want to face the responsibilities that come with it. The Robber did wrong not the Girl.
