Ugh - we found out that each of the lower grade classes has to perform a cheer at our TAKS rally this week. Any suggestions for an easy-to-remember cheer for 1st or 2nd grade students to perform? Many of them will already be freaked out to be performing in front of the whole school, especially in front of "the big kids" (plus... just a bit last minute, so not a lot of practice time... and also the little ones are doing their TPRI Mon. and Tues. and some do worry about that as well) so something not overly complicated is best!

When I taught a TAKS grade before choosing to teach a lower grade, TAKS rallies really did nothing to inspire the kids, but the school chooses to continue with the tradition anyway.

Buffy, you have my sympathies....TAKS is nothing more than an excuse for the schools, IMO. It stops teachers from REALLY teaching, and forces them to teach the test instead - at some point, parents will realize it and FORCE them to abandon this garbage and go back to real teaching - the teaching that ONCE had us with kids that could discuss the classics, perform basic and advanced math equations - AND balance a check book.

The parents can do that?

Roamingwolves, that cheer was excellent.

Yep. They forget - they elect the school board, they can fire 'em, too. First, though - they've got to care enough to get involved and find out just what is going on in the schools..."mainstreaming", "social advancement", etc.
Tell me something...if an 8 year-old can operate a computer, but not do basic math....are they educated?

For some reason I remember my TAAS one from way back in the day. It sounds good with TAKS. "You can do it, you can do it, pass the TAKS, yes!"

Instead of a cheer, how about informing parents about the test? I just spent the past two weeks drilling my kid on time-saving tactics, only to find out that there is no time-limit for third-graders, they can take as long as they want. Hopefully my son did ok. He has been getting mixed messages between me and his teacher on test-taking strategies.

How about "we love TAKS, yes we do...we love TAKS, how 'bout you?"
