Temple Beth-El on San Pedro lies kind of west of a gay district, and inbetween there's a hipster bohemian style community. Jews live kind of scattered in S.A.... when I was there our neighbors in Helotes were Jewish, but there was very few others. There's more of a concentration of them around Stone Oak, the city of Shavano Park, and Castle Hills.

If you are Orthodox or Conservative or Reconstructionism try living around NW Military Drive between Huebner and Blanco - this is where the shuls for Rodfei Sholem, Agudas Achim are, and Temple Chai meets in JCC. If you are into Chabad they are along Blanco but I think they're remodeling.

Depends on what type of style you like. The Temple Beth-El area is nice if you like bohemian style stuff but I don't know if there is like a big kosher grocery section or anything in that area.

The area just east (I think) of Shavano Park off of NW Military and Wurzbach Parkway has a big concentration of Jewish families and individuals. That's right by the Jewish Community Center and down the way a bit is another temple, but I cannot for the life of me remember the name (probably because I'm not Jewish...sorry!). There's also a great HEB with a a very large kosher section in that area.

If you move up farther past 1604 on Huebner there are some great apartments up that way. Being young and single there are lots of bars and night life in the Huebner, Stone Oak and 1604 area that would put you right in the middle of it within a short distance of like minded people. The drive to practice facility (is that where you'll be working? Or by the AT&T center?) shouldn't be too bad...like 20 minutes tops with traffic. To the At&T center...that's another story.

The HEB Alon market is on NW military at Wurzbach and is one of the larger sources for kosher foods in the area now because of the large nearby Jewish community. Their butchers area also versed in kosher requirements and are very helpful with meat selections. You can also speak to the kosher manager if you have concerns there.

By the way, HEB stands H.E.Butt Grocery Stores, not what you may think as a northern friend of Jewish descent once thought upon moving to S.A. As in "How nice they have a store especially for us".

I recommend the area others have mentioned -- by the JCC on NW Military and Wurzbach. There are lots of homes around the area plus a few apartment complexes (Winding Creek and Hidden Oaks are right next to each other with the JCC on one side and a temple up the street on the other. Then the HEB Alon Market with its huge kosher section along the back wall.

Good luck with your move! Hope you enjoy the area you move to.

Just a helpful note:

Green Vegetarian Cuisine on N. Flores St. is a kosher restaurant, and I've often seen large groups of orthodox Jews there, especially on Sunday nights. It's definitely not a Jewish area, but Temple Beth-El is really close by.

Lucky you on that Spurs job!!!

Hi Babs,

I'm not Jewish so I cannot offer any information, but I noticed your username and realize you are from Michigan. When I first moved here, the Spurs were in the playoffs against...... the Detroit Pistons! I am not a sports fan, but HAD to watch the game to determine if I was a Texan or just another transplant to Texas. I found myself leaning towards one team.........the SPURS! So I consider myself a Texan now, hope you feel the same way once you start working for them. If you thought Detroit fans were crazy for the Pistons, you haven't seen the Spurs fans yet!!!!! BTW, my daughter is a 2000 alumnus of U of M. Go Blue!
