any recommendations for outdoor antenna that would get good reception in the 78070 zip--around Bulverde/Spring Branch

if you spend enough do you need an amplifier or a rotar

my sister is tired of paying for satellite and I was going to get her a new HD antenna for her birthday

they are off couple of miles off Hwy 46--tall hill--but trees around
she will mount it outside since they live on land not subdivision with HOA rules

I entered your ZIP code into Antennaweb. It looks like you would need a VHF/UHF "fringe" antenna. You should be able to pick up 4, 5, 12, & 29. You could probably get channel 2 off the backside of the VHF elements, since that station is almost 180 degrees from the others. Not sure about channel 35 without a rotator, but it might work. Antennaweb doesn't list some stations, like 9 & 26, among others. I'm guessing you might need some kind of amplifier for those.

Radio Shack is the only retailer in the area I know of that would be likely to stock traditional rooftop TV antennas, and their in-store selection tends to be limited. They have an Antennacraft Colorstar C490 for $105. That might work in your situation. Their website shows it in stock at some of the stores in the area, including New Braunfels.

I would say start with just a properly aimed antenna, and see what you get. Then try an amplifier and/or rotator if you don't get good results. Put your address in Antennaweb's website for more info:
