When I'm in Austin, I usually try to buy something at Book People - to keep an nice independent alive. I remember when we only had Book Stop here outside of the mall stores. Half-price is limited in selection.

B and N and Borders' were vast improvements.

Yes, the signs in the window don't say "Barnes & Noble Coming Soon" anymore, so I guess that's that.

When times were better, I bought lots of books. I really couldn't afford them, and they were a type of vice in that respect.

I think the focus is now on the Nook and digital sales rather than brick-and-mortar shops. I would love to have a reader, because the Library has downloads FOR FREE! Since I read several books a week, I can only afford to purchase and store a portion of what I read.

It looks to me like the businesses that depend on disposable income are often supported by teens/young adults that don't really manage their money very well. Then, when times get tough and that money dries up, they go out of business. Starbucks, anyone?
