Since the mid sixties, I've eaten many times(before and after Bob) at Bob's Smokehouse on Rigsby and Roland. It was always good when Bob was alive and was totally hands on. Since his departure, while the Q is good, it's just not the same

This thread inspired me to drive to Luling yesterday to try out City Market. Well worth the drive!

I have not had any decent brisket in SA but have not tried Two Bros. It does get 4 stars from the expert at fullcustomgospelbbq.com
This guy is a fanatic. I always agree with his ratings. I don't believe he has a 5 star in San Antonio. (the majority get only 2 stars)

Other favorites of mine in no particular order:

Luling City Market
Kreuz in Lockhart
Louie Mueller in Taylor

Have not tried this one either but it gets 4 stars
Home of Da Smoke
It is out hwy87 not far from Texas Pride (which gets only 2 stars)
Went to try Two Bros yesterday and I would give it 3-4 stars out of 5. 4 only because it is a nice place to sit outside and they have a good selection of Shiner products. I was a little concerned that I saw what appeared to be Kingsford charcoal and lighter fluid. Lighter fluid is a deal breaker when it comes to bbq.
It is the best I have had in SA but still quite a bit below Lockhart, Luling and not even close to Franklin's.
People working there were friendly and helpful.

OK, I tried Garcia's yesterday, and agree that it is outstanding. I had no idea they had been open since 1962, and it doesn't look like they have changed a thing since they were opened. Prices were good and everyone in there was nice. The meat was lean and had a great flavor. I recommend it highly, but would need to put a plate of Bob's right next to it before I could say it was better.

Ok. Rudys + Bill Millers = fast food. It's good but it's fast food.
Make the drive to Driftwood and go to SaltLick. Great BBQ
family style, bring your own beer and live music.
Great ribs and brisket. The sausage is good too. Was on Man v Food
tv show....Did I mention you can bring your own beer??

The places those food shows go generally tend to be a big disappointment.

I asked TwoBros about the charcoal and lighter fluid when I was there a while back.
They use it to get the wood fires started. They said the lighter fluid is not sprayed on the wood but just the charcoal when they are trying to get it to light the wood.

I've had Salt Lick twice and I think it's over-rated. The food isn't THAT good like everyone makes it out to be. The drive can be scenic (if you drive a certain way) but the food just wasn't all that everyone made it out to be in my opinion. The pecan pie with ice cream was amazing though.

I assumed that was what they were doing but I still think that is introducing something that I don't want close to my food. I have been smoking for 30+ years and have never used lighter fluid for anything. The smell makes me gag. Natural lump charcoal and a chimney will start a fire quicker than the lighter fluid. Just my opinion....
