Sculley targeting junk food (http://www.mysanantonio.com/health/no_more_coke_but_diets_ok_94033414.html - broken link)

Quote:
City Manager Sheryl Sculley has declared war on sugar.

Sugary sodas no longer have a home in the city's 250 beverage vending machines, and unhealthy foods in the 75 snack machines in city facilities are next.

Let's see....budget shortfalls, street and infrastructure issues, police issues......

and she's got time to even THINK about what's being sold in the vending machines??? Someone has WAYYYY to much time on their hands! Besides - offer a variety, and let the market decide.

Perhaps she has witnessed the 3 pm energy crash that happens throughout the city departments and wants to increase productivity? When productivity increases, new ideas are born!
Shoot, the 3 pm energy crash is here at my work too! We started doing more fruit, veggie, and healthier options for meetings and it seems people are more bright eyed and still productive toward the end of the work day.
I'd love to see vending machines (anywhere where vending machines are located in the city) that have sugar free candy (for those with diabetes), lite potato chips (corn tortilla chips, 100 calorie popcorn bags) and non high fructose corn syrup diet soda.

Smoking ban: done deal. Up next: junk food ban. Future bans will probably include alcohol bans, pets in public bans. One person vehicle bans. Power lawn equipment bans. Outdoor BarBQ bans. Home gardening bans. Bans on anyone hiring a Nanny that's not a member of the government.

Yet another example of government trying to run our lives.

Yea well Sculley makes what about 250,000 a year as city manager?!

Being detached from everyday Americans' real lives, sometimes, the wealthy in power just don't make the best decisions (BP oil execs included ).

I admit, I was upset when they offered to roll the red carpet out for her (perks and a car at taxypayer expense) when she was going to be offered the job in SA. She seems like she knows how to do her job but hopefully she remains focused on more pressing issues.

Pretty soon we're all going to have to steer in the 10 o'clock/2 o'clock position ( cuz she says so) and we'll only be allowed 2 hours of TV a week (cuz she says so). Holy crap. Someone stop the crazy train.

I viewed this as an employer making a choice for its employees, like those employers who declared their buildings or vehicles to be smoke free years before the law required it. Don't private employers make this kind of choice all the time?
