I have *definitely* noticed that I used to see more fireflies when I was a kid all the time all over the place at night.....but I started to see them less and less over the years.....and even my father recently commented on how we just don't see them anymore.....

He did start to theorize on all sorts of pesticides, chemicals, and whatnot.....same things that I have also thought about as well.....

I have also read, seen, and heard about a decline in bees as well.....among other creatures.......

We still see fireflies out here in the country, mainly around the dry creek...they like to have some moisture in the soil.

The pesticides and chemicals we use in our lawns [not me, we're an organic hohsehold] has eradicated many native species of plants and insects. We are [very quickly] destroying the biodiversity which once made our city look so beautiful. Weeds aren't bad, they're necessary and usually what bugs like bees and fireflies call food/home. If you still want your lawn [aka green desert] then at least plant a small "Biodiversity Garden" with native plants and allow weeds to grow there. You'll notice many beautiful bees and other amazing creatures will begin to frequent your garden

I just saw a slew of them lighting up the woods by McAllister Park a night ago.

Love these guys and how they bring back enchantment in everyday life.

Thought I might revive this thread to see if lightning bugs might be making an appearance this year with all of the rain we've been having. Here next to a golf course in 78251 we haven't seen any this year or the previous three years we've lived here for that matter. It looks like according to this thread that they are seen in some SA neighborhoods.

There is a biking path next to the Alzheimer's nursing facility on Huebner north of Military. Last year there were there in droves. I think it is about environment and that environment was rich for them. Since I know they are there, I don't go looking anymore, I know they will be there.
