I am seeing a lot of fireflies this year. All the rain will be good for them - they like to lay their eggs in or near moist soil.

Fire ants are a big threat to fireflies - they eat firefly larvae (which live in and on the soil.) So it could help to get rid of any fire ants in your yard.

You have to be away from lights, even so there aren't near as many as there used to be.

I've seen a few in my back yard. People are using too many pesticides nowadays. Pretty soon there will be no fireflies, lady bugs, dragonflies, bees...........all the beneficial bugs.......praying mantis....anyone seen any of them? I've seen one dragonfly lately, two ladybugs, early spring bees were swarming all over a bush in my front yard so I just sat down on the ground and watched them as long as I could. Haven't seen any more since.

A lot of people are spraying their yards for mosquitoes these days, and that will definitely kill the good bugs.

However I have not sprayed (don't like to use pesticides if I can avoid it) and I am seeing lots of fireflies, lady bugs, bees, butterflies etc. out in my garden. I haven't seen any praying mantis - they are rare sights for me. However I have lots of dragonflies as well as their close relatives the damselflies - that's probably because of my pond which attracts them.

I always recommend the (100% organic) boiling water treatment for fire ant mounds - works great for me and usually takes only 1 application. A large tea kettle or saucepan should hold enough to do one mound.
