The company I work for has offered me a lateral move to work in Ontario, CA. My husband is self-employed.

I'm originally from the Detroit area (burbs) and my husband is from Long Island...we currently live in Pennsylvania.......so moving is not new to us. I would love to live in a warmer climate, but I don't want that to be my only reason to move.

Our price-point for a home is approximately 300K. I want the same things everyone else asks for..........nice home (newer, not a ton of work to be done), safe area (comfortable walking down the street) amenities (nice places to walk down the street and have dinner and a drink on a Saturday night and/or just head for a park in the afternoon).

I've spent some time reading the posts on C-D and it's obvious I need to live close to where I will work (which is just South of the Ontario airport). Rancho Cucamonga seems to be the city name that comes up most often as within my price range and nearby.

I'm seeking recommendations on where to live (commute time under 30 minutes/ home price point), insight on the area in general, any info. on the location where I will be working?

I'm happy to provide more clarification if needed, since it's hard to know how much info. to give without writing a book. Appreciate any insight or info............thanks for your time.

You can get everything you're asking for - except for maybe this...

If you want to be able to walk to dinner and entertainment, then you're most likely going to be looking at the downtown areas in the older cities - which means mostly older vintage homes. If you really want a newer home, then you most likely will need to drive to dinner - it won't be far, but it won't be down the street!

Good luck with your move!

Hi elyse,
I live in Redlands ( about 40 miles east) and I like RC as well for the reasons you stated. It is NOT a green as any of the states you have lived in though...in fact...right now its dry and the hills are brown.
Below is a great link to the mls lite site and you will love it. Let me know if you need some help, but, I think you will be able to use it OK.
It will be hot here for the next 3 months or so..mountain and communities are close and cooler...so you can escape...and if you can ...think about buying a house with a pool. There are so many houses for sale out here! Some have been vacant for a long time so make sure you get all the info you need and a GREAT real estate agent and a great (not cheap) home inspector to assist you!

Thanks for the responses and the link!

Can anyone comment on the area just South of the Ontario airport, where I would be working?

Just below the 60 Fwy, between Whispering Lakes Golf Course (on the west) and Hamner Ave (on the east) is a large neighborhood where the houses/townhomes run from $200K to $325K. Here's an example of a 4 bedroom in that area.

Good luck!

There's also a brand new Master Planned community South of the 60 by where your work called Edgenglen.

My wife's co-worker lives there and seems to like it. Prices may be in your range for a New unit, or, I'm sure there are foreclosures there that will fit the bill.

Edenglen - New Homes for Sale in Ontario by Brookfield Homes Inland Empire

The area directly South of the airport has a sliver of residential/industrial... further south is mostly/all farmland/agriculture.

That area of Ontario is called the New Model Colony... for future development... (next 20+ years?).

What about Chino? Redlands is probably too far away from your job. Ontario has some bad parts (as do most cities); don't let those nice new homes sway you.

Oh yea, you can always come down to Chino ... but most of Chino's not walkable at all... especially if your not in the downtown areas but the suburbs.

Then again I can probably say that with most Southern California suburbs... as mentioned by others above.

Claremont is the town that is close with a nice downtown and you would miss traffic( generally ) both ways. I do not like any areas below the 10 freeway and do like many areas above the 10 and the 210.

Let me just be frank. If you like the mentally insane, seasoned criminals, pedophiles, no jobs, and enough illegal aliens to fill the ocean. If that all sounds good to you then come on out. Oh yea...I forgot the gangs, gays, druggies, diseases, homeless, forest fires, and earthquakes. Oh but its california! We are special people because we say we are!
