I saw this just before I went to bed last night. What a tragedy!

That's technically Johnson Valley rather than Lucerne, to be annoyingly and maddeningly precise.

I guess. All the news stations are reporting it as Lucerne. All I know about Lucerne is it's the back way from Palm Springs to Victorville via 62, and 247.

I have a bunch of family living in Lucerne, and some of them are into the offroad crapola that was going on when this happened. In fact, one of them left a Facebook message saying they were going to "see some dirt races" this weekend.

Naturally, I'm wondering why my phone messages haven't been answered. Not quite ready to jump in the car and head up there, but I'm getting close.

I hope they're ok, Fontucky.

This is something my kids are into. I am so glad they weren't there. But they did go to Hot August Nights in Reno and came back home the day before the accident on 395 in Bishop that killed a bunch of people and injured a bunch more. Stuff like this just worries me and freaks me out.

They were there, as I suspected. They'd been standing in that very spot, but moved to the other side because the crowd there had become drunk and rowdy. Apparently there were drunken idiots there who were crowding the track, getting entirely too close to the road. Some were even going out into the middle of the road acting like alcohol-soaked daredevils playing "chicken".

These people assume risk when they attend events such as this. That point seems to have been lost in the hoopla.

I saw a video on one of the stations and people had to keep being told to get off the track.

Assumption of the risk will be the defense to the negligence lawsuits that are going to come out of this. From a legal standpoint, it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I am glad your family got out of the area and are ok. So sad for the families of those who died.
