I see that a lot of the questions/answers here are from '07 & '08 & '09, so, here is a question looking for an updated answer........

We are looking for a retirement location to buy a home in. We are limited by the amount we have ready to spend......try $65-90K. Now we just took a trip to Redmond OR, and I have to say that it is a great looking city, and easy to buy into for that range....I mean 3/2 1400 sq ft, built in 2004, etc, etc.

Only problem is, we have both spent the majority of our years in CA, and a lot of that in So CA.

So, as is everyone, we are trying to stay in that price 'zone' and we are looking for first, a low crime rate. Also, we would like close proximity to hospitals, shopping etc. Schools are not a concern, as we too old to worry, with the exception that in really bad school districts, there is usually a higher crime rate.

All things considered, we are looking at VV, Hesperia, and Apple Valley. The city-data site shows Hesperia as a lower crime rate, but I wanted to hear from those of you that live and/or know the real scoop.

Any help or suggestions regarding these or other areas please let me know.

thanks in advance......
MOR
(Fred)

My parents live in Hesperia. I'm not sure it has a low crime rate. There seem to be a lot of questionable people up there and a lot of skullduggery up there in general. In fact, I'm going up there Saturday. They would love to move from there, but with the economy in the crapper they are staying put for now. They have a gorgeous custom home with acreage, but they aren't about to give it away at a bargain basement price.

Look at the crime indexes for those 3 cities:

Hesperia: 217 (2008)
AV: 259 (2008)
Victimville: 430 (2006)

Compare that to Los Angeles: 349 (2008)

And Fontana: 270 (2008)

True dat. The desert gets its share of haters too, so I feel I'm doing my civic duty as well.
