Hello there, we're currently in Alaska, but headed to Barstow at the end of the month! Excited to skip out on the super cold weather up here(-35 right now). Anyway, I was directed to this site for any information I should be aware of, housing to look into, about how long it takes to get from Barstow to Fort Irwin in the morning and afternoon when everyone is going to and from work, good places to look for jobs(online newspaper isn't much help), how much is gas? ours is $3.60ish a gallon. But any suggestions, tips, recommendations that you think might be helpful to us, please share! Very much appreciated

Kyle & Nikki

Gas is running about 3 bucks a gallon with a few places a bit cheaper. Supposedly the Flying J has it at $2.90, but I'd have to see that to believe it.

That's the discount for having to dodge a bunch of crazy bigrig drivers to get in that place

If you are coming from Barstow its around 35 miles and 40-45 minutes depending on where you are coming from. You can't speed on that road so you can't really shorten the time. 35 minutes or so when you go against traffic.

A little over an hour on the bus from Victorville or Apple Valley if you choose to live there.

Not sure what the current situation was, but if you're drug free, theres a TON of low wage jobs in the outlet places. Also, when the Home Depot opened, the opening was delayed a couple months in part because they could not find enough employees to pass the drug test there. I'd think that $10 a hour at Home Depot plus a GS job at Irwin would provide a pretty nice income for an inexpensive area like Barstow or Apple Valley/Victorville.

BTW, Vegas is 2 1/2 hours away and if you can temper your spending habits, there are nice enough hotels that often have $60/day weekends (Orleans, Main St. Station, Silverton, and Eastside Cannery come to mind), low cost food, entertainment, and gambling options that come to mind, and its a great relief once every other month or so from the isolation in the high desert.

I'm not sure why anyone would want to live in Barstow. It's extremely ugly, a 90 minute drive to get anywhere decent and the cultural equation of Barstow hovers near zero. Sorry to sound so negative, but Barstow is not the most scenic place on the map, to put it mildly. Yes, the climate there would be superior to Alaska, but then again, so would Siberia be preferable.

Also, the winds in Barstow from March-June are epic.

They would want to live in Barstow because its the closest place to Fort Irwin and there is decent paying jobs available there in a very tough economy and Barstow is inexpensive enough that one could save away quite a bit of money over a few year period.

There are people who can live anywhere and make the best of it. More power to them.
