Propane is a commodity just like gasoline and crude oil and is thus subject to the same whims and vagaries of the Spot markets and speculation. Traders LOVE a good cold snap and know that you'll either pony up or freeze.

Hey jennr8er, what did you end up doing? We live in Joshua Tree and were considering giving up our place for one set up with propane- we are in your same initial situation with a 10 month old and summer will end soon enough. Any wisdom 5 years later?

We've lived in a rural area of the Rockies for 17 years and heat our 2000 sq. ft. home with propane. In the winter, where night temps are often below zero, our propane consumption is roughly three gallons a day. The home is well insulated, but DW likes the thermostat set at 72 minimum. We run a gas fireplace during the day as we enjoy it, but it's probably less efficient than the furnace, which I set at 65 at night.

We always have signed up for a contract price with whatever supplier we use. With low prices this past year, our level payment plan was $95/mo. I suppose NG would be cheaper, but it's not available.
