If the job is stable and works for you, then living in Riverside could be fine. 92506 and 92508 are the top areas, although some like the charms of the Wood Streets near downtown. Don't add to the commuting glut by working in Riverside and living farther away; Corona, as an example, is one of the most over-developed areas in SoCal.

I am looking at the 92503, Vanburen and the 91 area, what is the closest beach to that area? Is that a safe area and how bad is the smog and heat?

Riverside used to be awful but it's much better today. I would do it if I were you. Just try to avoid the Rubidoux area.

The smog is horrible in summer. I've worked in Riverside for the past twenty years and it is not a place I would want to live. Sure, there's some areas that are nice but it is surrounded by bad areas for the most part. High hispanic population and grafitti.

I second that about the smog. And I lived right off VanBuren by Walmart. It is the street that never sleeps.
Riverside has always been one where there are good areas directly against bad ones. Problem is the bad ones don't stay where they are.
92503 has some nice places, home wise, which are older but in good shape. But research carefully any area and its adjacent neighbors. The neighborhood I lived in when we first moved to Riverside in ten years had turned into the sister of the bad area next to it and driven most of the people who lived there before out.
It also gets very hot in Riverside, and while the wind (or what some of us call a breeze) helps it can dissapear in the summer. Last year the humidity was awful with the monsoon season starting early in Arizona. If you have problems with breathing I wouldn't reccomend Riverside since its in the middle of the worse area for air pollution in the country.

Huh? The only bad town near Riverside is San Bernardino. Rialto isn't too close, Moreno Valley, Corona, and Grand Terace are respectable. Only certain parts of Riverside have grafiti, mostly Rubidoux, parts of La Sierra, and Casa Blanca (which has been cleaned up recently). The area around Norte Vista High is scummy too but other than that Riverside is gorgeous. I wish I were still there

Most of Riverside is actually very suburban and bland...that's my only compliant. Even Moreno Valley, which is the "bad" city of Riverside County has a crime rate of the national average and slightly higher income levels than the rest of the county. Riverside is a good place to raise a family.

I live in Riverside and I love it!! It's close to everything. there is alot to do. yes there are some shady parts but you learn where they are and stay away from there. I love the way the Mission Inn gets decorated up for christmas and they even do fireworks the first night they light the lights. they have some relaxed bars if you want to take in a band and get a few drinks. also the presidential lounge in the Mission Inn is nice to get a few drinks if you just want to chill!! there is a drive in that they just remodeled we go to it and feel very safe. my kids even love it here and they are 20,19 and 17. they say there is lots to do also. yes, it's not orange county but....that's where i grew up and i'm glad to be out of the superficialness of that area anyway!! if you give it a chance i think you will like it. oh, and the views are gorgeous. mountains everywhere. and hiking a plenty :0)
