Am trying to find the best way for a friend w/o a car to come visit me from Riverside. From what I can tell the only option would be to rent a cheap car from RelayRides which for two days would end up costing ~$90 round trip including gas. Taking some super long route through LA/OC is not an option. Are there any cheaper alternatives for a direct route?

The Metrolink "Inland Empire - Orange County" train runs from Riverside to Oceanside. Takes two hours. You can pick the friend up there, or the friend can hop on the "Coaster" train from Oceanside to downtown San Diego, one additional hour.

Weekend metrolink passes are $10. Don't remember how much the Coaster cost.

The Metrolink website isn't working properly and the Coaster seems confusing as well. Greyhound it is!

Not working, eh? I just went there.

Tell me what's confusing about this:

It all seems straightforward to me.
