I am currently located in San Diego with my beautiful wife and precious 5 month old son but my job is relocating me to work at Ft. Irwin. I am familiar with how horrible Barstow is and the surrounding areas but I must make the move here. I have a great job and this will propel me further. This is the only reason I am willing to make this move and that my son is too young for school. Now on to the beef of my post...where do I live? I have been seriously considering sucking up the commute and moving to Silver Lakes. However, a big concern of mine is that they do not offer wired internet (maybe I just can not find a provider) which is a big deal with my job. Is there ANYWHERE in Barstow or the surrounding area that would be ok to rent a house for a year or two that I wont SERIOUSLY regret and have to worry about my families safety?

Suck up a commute to Victorville, etc. Don't live in Barstow for crying out loud. I was at Ft. Irwin for two years in the late 90's. Good luck.

Well, to specify...I am willing to commute from any of the surrounding towns like Victorville, Apple Valley, etc. I just need the specific areas to look at. I am not familiar with these towns besides the fact that they are horrible places to live lol! I am trying to mitigate how horrible our life is while we are there.

My brother works at Ft. Irwin. He commutes from Hesperia with 3 other guys. They take turns driving each week.

Ok, but is Hesperia a decent place for a family to live or what? It is great that he has coworkers to cut down on the expense of the commute but that is not exactly the answer I am looking for. I understand that Hesperia is near Victorville though. Maybe you can tell me how he feels about the specific area he lives in? Thank you!

From what I recall, the Hesperia/Apple Valley/Victorville area was more or less in the same league as other "normal" IE areas.

Hey, at least you're entering this phase of life with high expectations and a healthy sense of optimism.

Stay away from the Brentwood area off of Roy Rogers and away from "old town" Victorville, seems to be more concentrated areas of crime in those neighborhoods. Adelanto is also rough, there are state prisons in those areas. The area behind the mall in Victorville is commuter friendly, but not extremely nice. Apple Valley is a ways off of the main highway (I-15), but has more concentration of nicer homes mainly off of Apple Valley Road/Jess Ranch area. The Sycamore Rocks area is also nice, out in the desert even further though, but a straight shot to I-15, and on the north end of Apple Valley. There are some condos behind the hospital in Apple Valley that are also nice North of Hwy 18. In a gated neighborhood. I don't now much about Hesperia, so I can't comment sorry. But I agree, from what I have seen driving through Barstow, I would not want my family there. Good luck.

My thoughts exactly. He should quit his job and stay in SD. Go to work at a burger stand. What a great attitude he has...

It's an "ok" place. He would rather live on 500 acres in Wyoming or Montana, but that's not an option for him right now. He lives in 5 acres in Hesperia in a 3800 sq. ft. home. He's fine with living there for now, but doesn't like the traffic or how the area has changed over the years. The demographics are a lot different than when he first moved there about 20 years ago.
