Everyone here can only give you their personal opinions which will vary greatly. Yes, I think the best way to make a huge decision like moving to any place a person does need to visit with plans of staying for a little while to not only see how a place looks but to get the "feel" of a place. Besides there are many small villages around Crestline and all of those mountain towns that you would have more then one choice. By visiting the area you would see all of those different places.

Title business
One of the questions was that the idea was to find a job in the title business. Being in escrow I can tell you the title companies are laying-off big time! See if you can find a job BEFORE coming out here. As for mountain living, you know the drill. Snow can be a real pain to have to live and WORK in! But honestly, in the last 10 years the snow in Running springs went from several feet on the ground to generally just a few inches. With 4WD you don't need chains for most of the mountain, so there you go. My 2 cents worth.

There are many singles that do live up in Big Bear. There are also tons of tourists that visit and many are fun to get to know. It is a party town on weekends but can be fairly quiet on weekdays. When I lived there I was single and had a good time meeting people from off the mountain and residents. Also had many good friends that were single. I personally felt safer, being female, as a single up in Big Bear. Just my personal opinion!

of course crestline was called the section 8 of the mountain communities, how true is that really? also is there anything to do in crestline and the surrounding areas? obviously going down into the city seems rather...unpleasant,from what i hear

Well, I don't think it's true. Yes, there aren't as many millionaires and people of wealth as there are in Lake Arrowhead but there are some very nice homes in Crestline and the owners of those homes chose Crestline for various reasons. One is that the homes are cheaper and another is that it makes their commute 20 to 40 minutes shorter. A third reason is that it is more laid back in Crestline and a fourth reason is that there's much less snow in Crestline and it melts faster there, too. I'm sure there are others...I just can't think of them.
I would never go so far as to say it is the Section 8 of the mountain (nor would you, if you don't want to make them mad! ) but it's true that it doesn't have as many people with money as Lake Arrowhead has. It is also true that there are plenty of people of lesser means in Lake Arrowhead, Big Bear, Running Springs and all of the rest of the mountain communities.
As for things to do, several things come to mind: shopping, fishing, swimming, boating, water slides, bowling, creating art and attending galleries, star gazing, craft shows, parades, wine shows, concerts, sledding, skiing, home and garden tours, gardening clubs, historical societies, animal protection and rescue stuff, hiking, nature planting & preservation stuff, the obligatory restaurants and bars...all depending on what time of year it is or which town you're in.

I'm sure this is not an exhaustive list but I'm exhausted and going to bed.
Oh...and one more thing...down the mountain isn't all bad. There are plenty of great things to do down there, too!

thanks for the thoughtful reply mrsgenealogy,im a young guy 22 so yea i was curious about what there is around there. crestline is likely where ill end up but im coming all the way from Connecticut so im doing as much homework on the area as possible. and so whenever i see differing opinions i like to investigate . after all im traveling a LONG way. a big draw for me besides my own personal reasons for going there or to SoCal in general, was the fact that crestline has some very very affordable rentals that you cant find in alot of places in this country. and its close to the city...and the schools. ive mostly heard possitive things so far,so its a plus.

18,000 acre fire in Big Bear right now ... uncontained. Mandatory evacations ... etc.
This is why, IMO, mountain living is so tough.
