Hello,
I am a recently college graduate, engaged man looking for a nice place to rent for 2 years on a new construction job in Indio. My fiance and I have both been small town kids our whole life so we are looking for a nice place to live. Although, I have lived in Tuscon and Escondido for the past two summers.

Anyways, can someone fill me in on the nice places to live in Indio. Have read some stuff about it not being the most safe place. Areas to avoid...anything to help me out since I will not be able to visit or find a place until i drive down there in a few weeks.

Thanks very much

That is what I have been hearing. The places are much cheaper in Indio it seems but that must be because no one wants to live there

I have worked in Indio (the court house) and although I don't live there, it doesn't strike me as a particularly dangerous or undesireable place compared to other areas in SoCal. It has nice area and lower class areas...but it is certainly liveable. You also have many nearby options to choose from if you don't want to live in Indio proper...but it's certainly not as bad as portrayed by people on here IMO.

I was born and raised in Indio until I moved to the bay area for college. Yes it is true that Indio certainly is not as aesthetically beautiful as some other desert cities and has it's problem areas however it is very liveable. Avoid the older neighborhoods and apartment clompexes and you'll be good: Penn West, Fred C. Young Farm Labor Camp, Jackson Terrace, and Mecca Vineyards. They're all pretty close to each other between Jackson St and Calhoun Street, and Van Buren Street. My parents own a home near Avenue 49 and Shields street and I can say that area is a great residential neighborhood. I'm pretty impressed with all the new developments on the north side of hwy 10. Anything really close to La Quinta is good. Hope this helps. Good luck with your search.
