Moreno Valley is a dump! Over run with illegal hispanics, gangs, and other crime. DO NOT COME HERE!
And quite personally you are ignorant and racist...Overrun with hispanics?? Wow, that is incredibly offensive. It's a city of nearly 200,000 people. It has it's good and bad. My family has lived here for 18 years, I turned out fine (studying for the GMAT). Just like any city, it depends on the neighborhood. I live in the NW end of town, it's nice and quiet. So please don't be racist or ignorant and cling to stereotypes that are forced fed. Find out the information yourself and make an intelligent choice (if you don't personally like the city, that's fine, but don't hate a place because of what you don't know)
I don't understand why people are saying MoVal is a dangerous, crime infested, gang infested, dump. I've been here for about 3 months now and I have yet to see any of that here. I agree with one of the other posters that it definitely depends on what area/neighborhood you're looking at. If anything MoVal is quiet and boring, at least the area I'm in is. I'm originally from Baltimore, MD and some of the areas back home make all of MoVal look like an upperclass suburban city.
My grandparents lived in Moreno Valley back when it was called Sunnymead. It was a really nice place to live back then, and I have fond memories of playing in their cul de sac late on summer nights.
By mid 1990s, my mom wouldn't even visit anymore the neighborhood had gotten so bad, and my grandparents sold their house and moved.
I drove through there not too long ago for nostalgia's sake, and I wouldn't feel comfortable living there.
I'd suggest a gated community if you can find one.
V. =)
I was told the city changed from Sunnymead to Moreno Valley. Then, I did some research and found out that Sunnymead is a small area in Moreno Valley now. The city was rezoned. But, after reading your post. I am no longer sure. Is it now only Moreno Valley?
One has to remember that the real estate market increases faster than wages. This is why the average family income in nice areas are 80K plus (think Yorba Linda, Anaheim Hills). 5 girls pregnant?! okay, thats weird, since in my middle school, there NO people pregnant. BTW that happens everywhere. It's not the school system it's families and friends. The average family income in California is 43k or so. That's 20k less.
I grew up in Moreno Valley and turned out fine. I go to college, my parents are upper middle class, my brother grew up in the city and went on to college and makes a good amount of money.
I'm not stating that it's not the best area in the world...but really... c'mon. As a psych major, the biggest reason that people focus on the negative is because the negative points are not as prevelant as the positive. Since they stand out, people tend to over-estimate the times that the negative things occur.
Like anywhere in the world, it's what you make of it. Again, it's an average suburb. It's nothing special and it's boring. Dangerous? Not more so than most places. Full of low class people that have no clue? Not more so than any other city. It's not that bad.
Teen pregancies at that high of a rate do not happen everywhere. It depends on income, level of education and culture. Lower income ethnic families are more tolerant of teenage pregnancies than the more affluent families in South OC or West LA. When I was in high school in the early 80's, I could count on one hand all of the teenage mothers who were at unwed mother programs at a different school in the district. 10 years later, when I worked at a school district a few cities north, there were 25 in that high school in grades 9-11, who were taking independent studies, home schooling or attending a Parent ED program. That is not counting seniors about to graduate. The more services the goverment offers these girls, the more their parents celebrate their babies, the more teenage pregnancies will continue. It is a social problem we have here in CA. It is a pathetic disgrace!
Teen prenancy is a social problem for not only in CA but also in other states, as well as in other countries in the world. I agree that low income is not affect to teen prenancy rate much. The main is awareness. Increasing knowledge makes reducing teen prenancy. However, do you think the parent education programe has two sides? It sometimes leads attandants to curious actions (!)

That's funny seeing how I'm currently in Yorba Linda and ran into a pregnant teen mother. Funny, but isn't Yorba Linda an affluent area? My point wasn't the rate, I agree. However, the point is that teen preganancies DO occur everywhere. And yes, there is no problem with the government aiding these mothers. Teen pregnancies will not stop with the stopping of government aid. Education of safe sex will aid in stopping, but the problem will never end.
I was born at March AFB and grew up in Sunnymead and garduated from MoVal HS. It is not the same city I grew up in and have been gone since 96 before my kids were to go to Jr High. It is better then some areas of SoCal. There are a few nice areas. I do however go to MoVal to visit constuction sites. In fact I was on one today that happens to be an apartment complex being built on the south end of town. It is being built with public money. I'm always amazed by how nothing ever looks really nice there. By that I mean the shopping centers that are only a few years old become run down and aren't maintained properly. The outside of most subdivisions are rundown looking too. Looks say alot about a place and community pride by it's residents.
I grew up in the Canyon Crest area of Riverside...Lived in Riverside pretty much all of my life..I moved to Moreno Valley after I married 4 years ago..Because in 2005, 2006 Moreno Valley was pretty much the only place we could afford a house. That was during the big housing boom.
We live near the Moreno Valley Golf Course..Moreno Valley isnt so bad..I laugh at all the posts that say Riverside is so much better..There are good areas and bad areas of Riverside & Moreno Valley just like any other city...For example University Ave in Riverside. That is a horrible area..Yet it sits next to one of the nicest areas Canyon Crest.
We have a nice affordable home in a good neighborhood here in Mo Val and we have never had any trouble...One problem I do see here are the schools...So we have our daughter in private school..But she probably would be in private school if we were living in Riverside...
Like I said there are good areas and bad areas..To any city.
