One way to save a little money is by enrolling in SoCal Edison's Summer Discount Plan. They install a device that remotely turn offs your A/C for a limited time. They say "up to six hours", but on the hot days this year it was no more than four (but from 2-6 pm). In return you may get as much as $200 in bill credits each summer.

Hi Panda, the Temecula area is nothing like Phoenix weather wise. Phoenix is inland in the desert and Temecula is about 25 miles from the coast. I lived in Temecula from 1995 until just last month and I thought the weather was the best in the state. The temps in Temecula are very moderate even in the summer although there is usually two or three weeks every summer where you will get +100 degree days. Also, there is practically no humidity.

Yes, a single story house is preferable if you can find one, but they are in short supply as builders prefer to build 2 story. I guess that is why my single story house sold in 72 hours in July.

There is a cool breeze that flows into Temecula every afternoon around 4-5PM from the ocean and the temp drops dramatically. I have seen the temp go from 110 to 60 in one day. The afternoons are nice and cool and I always slept with my windows open.

I did grow frustrated with having really cool temperatures outside but could not get the house to cool down. I had whole house exhaust fans installed in my attic, cost me $1600 but they worked excellent and paid for themselves. I strongly recommend having them installed, you will not be disappointed. I also had a couple of ceiling fans in the house and they worked great in conjunction with the attic fans. During the hottest days, my house would stay cool without A/C until 2-3PM and then I would have to sometimes run the A/C for an hour or two until the afternoon breeze blew in.

My house was 1650 sf on one level. It was just me and my son and during the hottest parts of the summer my bill would usually not exceed $150-175 per month. During the winter my electric ran about $75.

The Temecula/Murrieta area is a beautiful area and I am sure you will enjoy living there!

Just figure out a single room that you will spend most of your time in.....then cool just that room with a small window-ac unit.

That is outrageous. Our home is 2800 sq. ft.. We keep our home at 76 and have a pool pump running 6 hours a day. Our average bill in the summer is $220.

Hmm maybe it's time to look into some insulation and a new a/c unit.

It will pay for itself very quickly and your home will be more comfortable.
