I've been in worse settings (Boise, ID snow plus wind chill, for one). But my folks are advising against the car for the logistics I mentioned previously, so looking for more insight accordingly. How early/late do the buses run?
Google "Sunline transit" and look it up.

Thanks for the helpful info everyone. Unless a bigger opportunity comes by in the next month or so, I'll be heading down to Palm Springs armed with knowledge.

For the internship, it appears that breakfast and lunch are provided. But for evenings I'd like to know the food options within reasonable walking distance of Palm Springs Stadium? Fast food, chain restaurant, grocery/deli?

How long are you planning on letting your folks run your life? I assume you're out of college if you're interning.

Drive your car down. Using public transportation is not feasible, and not having your own ride also will put pressure on this host family to drive you around, despite your talk of walking. I personally would never arrive at a someone's home without my own wheels.

I drove over the Siskiyous in a Ford Escort when I was 19, in a snowstorm. It was the first time in my life I ever saw snow actually falling (urban SoCal native), and I am still here to talk about it.

I take it you aren't from Spokane or other locations in E WA that regularly get snow.

I don't think avoiding snow that may not even happen on the 1 or 2 days that you are driving there and back each time is worth being without your car for that long.

Yes, fresh out of college. I went to a private university and am up to my eyeballs in student loan debt, so I'm the stereotypical Recession-era 22 year old still partially financially dependent on his parents. It's not ideal, but such is life.

David, you are correct I'm not from Spokane *shudders*. I too would like to take my own vehicle and am not afraid to take on snow (I've done it before, albeit only once in my hometown and around my small college campus), but the fact that I'm still partly dependent financially (insurance, etc) makes it not entirely my decision.

I know this has a pathetic undertone, but I'm trying to look past it and make the best of it. Public transportation isn't a problem for me personally. All I care about is reaching work on time. If I have to walk just a little to get to a bus stop, so be it. It'll whip my lazy college-grad body back into shape.

Also after doing some math, I've found that gas expenses (driving there and back, plus around Palm Springs) would far exceed the cost of a reasonably priced two-way plane ticket I found. So the numbers are also in my favor here.

Hopefully this internship will get you some life experience. You shudder at Spokane, and yet it makes me drool.

If money is indeed that tight, then a bus pass may be the better route to go. It's a shame, because with any free time you had you could explore Southern California, if you had a car. Purchasing a bike may also be an alternative.

Cut the cord Smitty, it's time!
