The LA housing that is affordable is going to be a racially divided ghetto. Try the areas that were suggested above. They are affordable and much safer than SB. Riverside has good areas and bad areas, and you pay much more for the good areas.

You will likely be able to find something in the IE but not San Bernardino proper if you can do that.

I was born and raised in the area and like others have mentioned San Bernardino is a bit ruff around the edges and I would generally not recommend moving to San Bernardino proper, although there are some decent areas inside the city like around the university and the country club as well as a few houses in the foothills. Most of the city is in bad shape since the three largest employers the railroad, steel plant and the air force base shut down. That is not to say the entire area is bad many people from the surrounding communities still commute and visit San Bernardino on a daily basis for work, eating and shopping etc. I would highly recommend a few of the surrounding cities like Yucaipa, East Highland, Redlands, Beaumont, Loma linda and Grand Terrace which are all for the most part nice and a great place to raise a family.

Corona is nice. And just after Riverside. But that is going towards OC. I have heard that Riverside has a lot of bad things going on in it but I am in SB so it doesn't sound so bad in comparison to here. No reason to get a kid used to running through the crime ridden areas and being comfortable with it. Yucaipa is nice I have to say and calm and friendly. Grand Terraces crime has been getting a lot worse. I am not sure about Chino maybe someone else here could tell you about that. If you can afford LA I would go to LA. This whole area you are talking about you would be better off if your kids weren't putting down roots.

San Bernardino, once a sturdy, middle class "All-America City," is now bankrupt, the poorest city of its size in California, and a symbol of the nation's worst urban woes.

and also caution about most of...Fontana
Are you living under a rock? Colton and Rialto, yes watch out. But Fontana? You obviously know nothing, most of the time I don't even lock my doors in my Fontana neighborhood.

Sorry, but I put Fontana way, way lower than either Rialto or especially Colton. Most people in the IE consider Fontana a cheap hell hole.

San Bernardino went downhill because residents were very tolerant of druggies and gangstas. The good people packed up and left. Basically, a town where 80% receive government assistance and growing because the state locates all their welfare and medicaid offices there.

Somebody hasn't been to Fontana in a long time.
