Uplands a pretty nice affordable city, its a diverse community hispanic, black, white, etc.Its close to the city of Ontario, montclair, claremont, And its a pretty conveniant area to live in. Theres malls close by, Monclair plaza and Ontario mills mall. Not even 15 minutes away, well depending where you live at. Theres lots of shopping centers, many many apartments to look for close to the high school (Upland High). And its not too far from L.A. either.

My Grandma has lived in Upland for 40 years or so. But in the very north part at the top of Euclid ave in a very rich town called San Antonio Heights at the foot of the mountains. Her area is very nice and safe. I don't know about the lower parts of Upland as I never go there. Last time I saw old downtown Upland it looked crappy.

Upland is pretty nice actually. Nicer that alot of the other cities in the Inland Empire. I lived there myself for a little over 4 years.

Default Upland

I've grew up in Upland, left for about a decade and moved back with my family six years ago. It's a nice little town. True, the farther north you go in the city the nicer and more expensive the houses are and the fewer crime reports, although crime is not a big concern in Upland. I live within walking distance of the downtown in the southern part of the city and love my neighborhood. Very friendly neighbors (much more so than in my parents' north Upland neighborhood).

It is a bedroom community so it's pretty quiet -- lots of local parks frequented by families and that kind of thing, as well as one golf course. The surrounding area is growing and there is a more for nightlife than there used to be (although not in Upland itself): more restaurants and nice bars and even a few clubs. The city is in the foothills of San Gabriel Mountains, so a short drive will get you to some nice hiking trails as well as a small ski resort. About 45 minutes (if there's no traffic) the other way will get you to the beach. Plus Los Angeles is only 30 miles to the west.

As far as times to visit, any time is good. The climate is mild. Summers can get hot but it's not humid. It might rain a bit in winter, but rarely is it excessive. If you want to hit local tourist spots like Disneyland, come during the school year--spring and fall--when everything is less crowded.

Hope your daughter enjoys it here!

I see nobody mentioned the smog. When the air is hot and still... it is part of that big smog bowl. It settles in and one can develop allergies or athsma. It is one of the nicer parts of that area and having an airport nearby is great. (Ontario)... but if either of them have breathing challenges.. I would have them check into that part of it further.

I like the Moreno Valley Mall the best. It is close to where some of my cousins live (Perris, California). It is a little ways out, but I like the area better than ones closer in like Ontario.

Default Upland

Upland is not a bad city compared to most of the Inland Empire, however there are areas of Upland that have been completely taken over and are now low class and dirty - the only parts of Upland that are still decent are the Northern parts (above 16th street/Baseline), you may find good areas scattered about but generally speaking stay north. Or just do yourself a favor and move one city over to Claremont - so much more beautiful (yes more expensive as well)...but worth it imo. But coming from Perth to Southern California is going to be a huge shocker...be prepared.

Also, local amenities are everywhere...near to malls (Montclair Plaza in Montclair, Victoria Gardens in Rancho Cucamonga, and Ontario Mills in Ontario), lots of golf courses and world class golf only about an hour or so away in Palm Springs, it is basically an hour from everything (traffic permitting) - skiing, beaches, desert, hollywood. It sounds great but there is a lot of smog and it does tend to "settle" there because of the foothills, it's becoming more and more overcrowded and housing prices are generally ridiculous for anything halfway decent. Weather is mild year-round, not a lot of extremes, however I would visit during the winter months because they are the most beautiful personally.

Default Upland

Truthfully, I think you would be hard pressed to find a better place to live. Where else can you be at the beach in 45 minutes, the desert in 45 minutes, the snow and mountains in 10 minutes, big city (LA) in 45 minutes, international airport in 15 minutes, Las Vegas in 3.5 hours, etc. Crime rate is extremely low (except maybe in very southern part of city), schools are good, weather is beautiful year round, lots of shopping nearby, many nice restaurants, etc. Yes there is smog, although since I moved here 20 years ago it has gotten much better and besides, who doesn't have smog....at least in So. Cal.

Smile Cannot Be Beat!

I have lived in the pricier San Antonio Heights, or some refer North Upland, for almost 12 years and love it! I have four kids, my oldest 12, 10, 8, and 6. They each attended Pepper Tree Elementary for K-6, and the scores occasionally beat out Cardon Arbor View, Upland's terribly expensive private school. The area where I live has a 0.3% crime rate and I believe it isn't much higher in the Downtown and Historic Upland area. There are many shopping venues, great privately owned restaurants, even some franchises that are great too. There is smog, but only because of neighboring Ontario, and Los Angeles, and I haven't been too bothered as it has gotten dramatically better, like said. There is the Upland Country Club that is open to the public (golf course) and has a lot of parks, some better than others, but all relatively safe. The weather is slightly warmer than LA in the summers, but very cool in the late fall, winter months, into early spring. So you can basically visit whenever suits you best, and be comfortable. You really can't beat this place!!
