My research indicates that parts of the Inland Empire (e.g., Riverside) contain some of the worst air quality in the country, and equivalent to smoking two packs of cigarettes a day. It is also about 10 degrees hotter in the summer than the OC, and several degrees colder in the winter. However, home prices are much more affordable.

There is alot more smog in the EI, most of it comes from LA. But the IE is in a valley, between mountains where the smog gathers and settles. There's days when the clouds are an ugly brown.
Parts of the IE has gotten ash rain from some of the mountain fires.

We've done our research, and are moving to a very affluent community, but thank you for your concern

LOL .. yup you got that Dallas attitude already. Houston AND Dallas are both horrible crime wise. I grew up in Texas - do you really want to move to a place where EVERYONE has guns and will shoot over anything? Affluent community fine but you won't be able to do any shopping or anything outside that community without being "on guard" And trust me, home invasions are MUCH more common in Texas, being in a wealthy community is just going to draw MORE attention to you. And when you go to even wealthy shopping centers you will have to worry about getting robbed or car-jacked.

Not sure where you live right now but everyone says Ontario is one of the worst in the IE

I would check out Temecula. It is a wonderful family community. Great Schools! Crime rate is good and housing is at an all time low. Air quality is not bad. Temecula has much better air quality than other area of Riverside County.

Consider your commute time and long term job prospects.

Palm Springs - straight or gay - is terrific. Palm Desert is a delight too - and you are less than two hours from LA, San Diego, The beaches (upteen of them), the mountains, Mexico, Arizone and Las Vegas just a little further - a good weekend trip - - Palm Springs or any of the sister desert resort cities (depending on your pocket book) are little paradise havens, straight or gay, older, middle aged or younger - life is what you make of it - the atmosphere and climate for the majority of the year - is a true delight. We trip up to LA at weekends - Priceline has super buys for "quote your own price" hotels in the city -unbelievable - ask for 2 star for $50 and see what happens wow! so weekend trips can be mini holidays away from a holiday destination itself. Forget the heavy lead air of the cities in between the desert and the beaches - boy - do you think I am being paid by Palm Springs to push it? Nope - love it - but when I get tired - different fun is less than 2 hours away......in all directions.

Default Inland Empire cities

Run far away from Fontana. Lots of crime, run down housing and trash all over the city that no one seems to care to clean up, San Bernardino is the same with a few (very few) exceptions.

Redlands is a very nice city and so is Loma Linda. Both have excellent choices for health care, they are well kept and have lots of activities to offer.
Housing is very expensive in Southern California, you are looking at 1000.00 to 1500.00 for a one bedroom to rent an apartment, the closer to the beach you get the higher it gets. I have been in property management for 12 years over here.
Drive to the beach from Inland Empire is between 1-2 hours depending on which beach your driving to.

I moved from Phoenix to the Pass Area (Banning, Beaumont, Cherry Valley area). I love it. The weather is much nicer, and there is less crime here than Phoenix. The towns are really nice and the beach is only an hour and a half away.

Check out Discover the Pass || Banning, Beaumont, Calimesa, Cherry Valley, Cabazon, Oak Valley, Oak Glen to find out what the weather, demographics, local businesses... are like in that section of the IE. I bet you would like the area, especially coming from Phoenix.
