It depends on which part of Indio you're in. The new part of Indio on the north side of the freeway is nice. All new housing developments. Then there is the old Indio which is not so nice and has gang problems and a lot of crime. Indio is fine to drive through, eat at Sloan's (formerly Elmer's), shop at Mathis Bros., go to court or go to the Date Festival but beyond that, it's not the most desirable place to live. Granted, Indio is not as bad as Compton or any of those cities in South Central Los Angeles, but why would you want to live in Indio if you can choose one of the safer and nicer desert cities?

Thank you, we're considering the desert as a retirement location. Didn't know those cities faced this kind of trouble....on the surface they "seem" pleasant...

Can anyone tell me what are the shopping options like in Indio? I know Palm Dessert has the mall with all the chains. But what about Indio? Any malls or shopping centers in that city?

Yeah, they have the Indio Fashion Mall which is more like a swap meet.

Hello Twinke Toes,
Just wondering, my wife will be working at N. Sunrise way in Palm Springs and we have a 5 year old daughter. We are looking for a place where it is closer to my wife's work and yet closer to a good school also. We search for Rio Vista Elementary School in Cathedral City to be a better school than that of schools in Palm Springs. We are considering a condo in Desert Princess for us to live. Can you give me information on the area? Thanks.

Do yourself a favor, and don't move to Palm Springs. I am 21 years old and have lived here my entire life. Maybe it's because I've lived here for so long, but I can not stand it so I am moving in a couple months. This is a great place to live if you like golf and are retired or homosexual. 60% of the population here is homosexual and the other 40% are over the age of 60. It is beautiful here during the winter but the summers are hell. June-September the temp reaches to at least 110 every day. So it's a great place to have winter vacation house. Other than that, there are about 200 golf courses in the valley, lots of gated communities, and lots of country clubs. This is not a good place for young people since there is so little to do here for them. The crime rate here gets worse every year, and less than half of the population is caucasian. In other words, Palm Springs is not what it's portrayed to be in brochures or on tv at all. Very overrated in my opinion. But a great place to vacation.

I live in Indio, Ca. for over 40 years and still own rental property in Thermal. I raised 4 boys there and as far as the drugs in Indio, Mecca, Thermal, etc are concerned beleive me they are just as bad in Palm Springs, Palm Desert La Quinta, Rancho Mirage etc.
Drugs are all over.
The area of La Quinta is groing so fast that it has almost reached Thermal. We are about 1 1/2 miles from the airport.
We moved because of the 115+ heat. I can remember being at lake Havasu at 128* and getting in the water to keep cool. The water was so hot we got out.
Yes we have cold but if you spend the winter in a second home in the Coachella valley and summer at your home there's a happy medium. Good Luck

Palm Springs is full of old people who wear loud, gawdy outfits and jewelry trying to compete with each other on who looks the richest. Some words that some to my mind are.....snobby, socialite, old, cheesy, tacky, gold jewelry, obnoxious, rude, bad attitude, wrinkles, preperation-H, little mustaches, hawaiian shirts, blowdried hair, luxery cars.
It's a great place, beautiful geography. But that element of people there would drive me crazy to be around all the time.

Hmmmm ... funny how some people offer up commentary on what the Palm Springs area is like when they've never set foot here - ever. Some of these posters may be funky and all, but they just have no clue.

Here's one of the reasons you don't want to move to DHS. This is breaking news in the Desert Sun (our local paper) right now.
