How is the housing in Hemet or San Jacinto?
How safe if the Hemet, San Jacinto area? How far is it from Ontario, and what is the housing market like? We may be transfering to Southern Cal, from Portland Oregon, and are wondering if we will be able to afford the move.

There are parts of Hemet and San Jacinto that are just fine. If I were moving to the area and commuting to Ontario then I would live in the NW section of Hemet / SW section of San Jacinto, around Sanderson and Esplanade. Sanderson goes up to I-10 and you can take that into Ontario. Without traffic it is probably about 40 minutes or so. Someone else could probably tell you what rush hour traffic is like. I don't use that freeway very often during rush hour.
The market is down, probably a good time to buy, but who knows if prices will go up or down in the next few months to a year.
As to whether you can afford it or not, I don't know your budget. I will say that that area is one of the more affordable places in the IE that is still a decent place to live.

You can use the 215 to 60 free way to go to Ontario or you can always park your car in Riverside and use Amtrak to Ontario

Do your homework...
Be sure to check out this area thoroughly before making a home purchase. Although Hemet still has some decent areas, crime is increasing. Also, if you have young children I would recommend researching the school(s) that is zoned for the boundries you may live in as some or our schools are in "Program Improvement". Due to the Govenor's cuts to education Hemet Unified has reluctantly moved from a 20:1 to a 30:1 ratio for kindergarten. It won't be long before other grades are affected too.
Good luck with your search.

Moving from Portland to Hemet is definitely going to entail some culture shock.

Woooow, culture shock is an understatement. Hemet has the highest per capita enrollment of Marines in the country so keep your Prius out of the way of the SUVs.

I'm looking at San Jacinto and Hemet - how do you do the following "Also, if you have young children I would recommend researching the school(s) that is zoned for the boundries you may live in as some or our schools are in "Program Improvement"."
