Moving to Redlands, CA
Our family is moving to Redlands, CA in the summer of 2008. We need to find a two-bedroom apartment in a safe area, as we have a 5-year-old son. Can anyone who is familiar with that city give us some recommendations? We also need to find a good elementary school for our son. Our son's school is going to be the primary factor in determining where to live. Thank you very much in advance.

Living south of the 10 is a broadly good idea. Some decent pockets around University of Redlands. Most schools in Redlands are very good, but those in the south would be preferred. Good luck.

Thank you very much for your advice.
We have to apply for an elementary school way before we arrive there, I think. Can anyone name a couple elementary schools that are good? Thank you in advance.

I have lived in Redlands for over 30 years. Be prepared for a very hot summer. Temperatures may go up to 105. It is also a very beautiful town. Smiley School is a good school. It is nice to live southside.

Redlands is my favorite city...I regret I left. I moved there eight years ago fo the exact same reason...the schools. The fact is the schools are great all over. The East side schools I think are the best. It was at that time the newer area and so the schools were newer. I mean EAST REDLANDS, as if you're going up toward Mentone. EAST REDLANDS HIGH IS THE BEST SCHOOL. When it comes to Redlands you pretty much can't go wrong as to where to live. I would stay anywhere South of Church St. As for Apartments, look up 92 Kansas st and you will discover a plethora of great places to stay.

I disagree with the attitude that south Redlands is always best. The 92373 snobs insist their part of town is best, but check out the far EAST edge of Redlands adjacent to Crafton Elementary from Independence south to 5th including Moore Middle School. This would actually be East of I-10. You can't go wrong in these safe, clean, walkable neighborhoods.
There are not too many apartments, but you may luck out and find a nice home that someone can't sell so they are renting.

Before you rent an apartment in Redlands, check the address for sex offenders.

LOL WOW I lived in that area code and ATHT WAS MY FAVORITE! Also lived the North( hated it) AND EAST. Never thought of myself as a snob LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!! People and THEIR perceptions. Funny, I was one of the few African Americans there as well as running a business (1987-89) and NEVER encountered "snobbery." Moved back in 99 and left in 2002. As I said, in my post, "When it comes to Redlands you pretty much can't go wrong as to where to live." And then I went on to say "I" would stay, etc. etc. As for the East side you are absolutely right. A great area, not to many apartments, but East Redlands is great...can't go wrong either way.

My wife and I moved from the Chicagoland area to Redlands in 2005. Both teachers, we moved here shortly after college. We love it and will never return back to the midwest. Although it probably seems cliche, the weather is absolutely unbeatable--and it makes a BIG difference.
Opportunities to have fun and pick up hobbies are limitless out here. We own an RV and camp once a month at the beach. I surf every weekend. Vegas is 3.5 hours away. LA is between 1 to 2.5 hours (depending on traffic), and some of the most beautiful coastline awaits in OC.
That said, there is an adjustment that you will no doubt notice the second you arrive. The Hispanic influence is everywhere throughout the Southland, but even moreso in the Inland Empire. Outside of a few select areas of Redlands, it is not uncommon to feel like an outsider looking in. BBQ restaurants and pizza are relatively out of the question out here also.
Nevertheless, after surviving the initial "culture shock," you will love it.
