This is to anyone that can give me advice-
I will soon be starting my medical residency in Loma Linda University this July but I have a unique situation that I need help with: I am a single mom( widowed) with 7 years old twins( boy & Girl). The crazy hours of residency and on call schedule will require me to get a live-in babysitter/aupair which will cost ~ $12-14K a year. Also having a live-in nanny will mean I have to have at least a 3 bedroom apt/house. I have been looking at apartments and rental homes on-line and seems the cheapest for a 3 bedroom is at least $1,200/ month which I cannot afford on my $47000/year salary as intern.( since I will already be paying $1200/month childcare) Any advice on where to get cheaper housing around LLU in a relatively safe neighvorhood? Thanks |

If you by chance are Adventist, you can appeal through a local church and have assistance readily available. If you are in town already, look up info in the hallway by the Loma Linda Market and also by the bookstore. Have you tried the Trading Post? If you are not Adventist or not religious, this can be a tough row to hoe.

Thanks Kin Atoms, No I am not in town yet but as soon as I do I will look up the Loma Linda market. Yes I am an adventist! If pushed to the wall I might consider trying to appeal for help through that avenue also. Do you think I might find any cheaper apartments in the neighboring cities like Redlands?

I wouldn't wait until you are pushed to the wall. Go for self-advocacy now. Appeal as a widow with a child. You won't get any cheaper prices anywhere, but you may get more appeals being Adventist.

Thanks Kin Atoms for your advice. What kind of appeal /assistance do you think I could possibly get through the local church? I just really don't know how the appeal process works.

An appeal is a plea. There is no formal process. Speak with the minister or deacon. This would be the route to go. They can send you to a kindly, wealthy older person who has a room in the house, who would delight in caring for your child as well. That'd be the first route. The second would be to go through your supervisor and ask to be connected to the hospitals' chaplain, who may also have connections. Good luck.
