Ive visited the Palm Springs/palm desert area few times years ago but not longer than a week. I can handle the summer heat but my biggest concern are the rattlesnakes, scorpions, and black widows. I know this topic has been posted before but a current update would be awesome. I'm looking into condos and the scorpions going into peoples houses and having to constantly check shoes and clothing really wig me out.

Is this a common thing there?

Nope. I have never seen one in the 9 years that I lived in Palm Desert. Don't worry about it. There isn't enough open desert areas for them to become a problem and be seen.

The critters you mentioned are a million times more afraid of you. I'm more afraid of humans.

Most of Palm Springs (with the exception of the north end) is still pretty safe, despite what the crime stats seem to suggest.

But it does spill into other areas, especially at night. As bad as some places, no, but far worse than others and that is a concern. WHY is it being allowed?

Late reply, but, I'm not exactly sure. You would have to ask someone else that question.

Thousand Palms, Sky Valley, Thermal, and North Palm Springs are several of the towns in the Valley that lay over on open desert areas.

There are also open desert areas in several cities out there, as well (most specifically, Palm Springs, Indio, Cathedral City, Palm Desert, Coachella, and Desert Hot Springs).

From what i read according to the statistics it's more property crime and theft as opposed to violent crime which is considerably lower there compared to LA
