Well, I've lived in North County (San Marcos, Escondido, and Fallbrook) my whole life. But I have to say Fallbrook's San Diego's best kept secret. It's beautiful, much cooler than Temcula, Vista, or Escondido. Hilly and green, it has the perfect climate for growing almost anything. So if you love gardening or at least having neighbors who do, and you like to be close to everything San Diego AND LA has to offer, then Fallbrook's the perfect location. I've moved 6 times in my adult life and 5 have ALL been in Fallbrook! Rented a house, bought a house, built a house, bought a house...BUTTTTT, I drive to Escondido to take my 10 yr old daughter to Calvin Christian school because it's the best run school there is! It's only 20 mins from my house which is 3 mins from the 15, so that's cool. The beach is only 25-28 mins away, Temecula is about 20 also and it has the wineries, but I'm not into that, but they have a great mall there that we like to go to. But right next to Fallbrook is Bonsall and it actually has a movie theatre and that's 6 mins from my house. I tell ya, the public schools in CA all stink compared to other states, but if you're a real hands on parent and WORK with your kid and GET INVOLVED in your public school, any kid could do alright, but it's just a bit more difficult. I go private for religious matters, would probably do that even if I lived in a town that had excellent public schools. I want those who have the most time with and influence on my child to be like minded, so Christian is my only option. Now Fallbrook has many very good private schools, like Zion Lutheran and St Stephans Lutheran, but I wanted all the "perks" that most public schools have (or had with all their cuts) like Band and sports, so that's why Calvin Christian is the very BEST school I've ever seen in this area. It goes from Preschool all the way through 12th grade! How's THAT for giving a kid a chance at making long term friendships? Can't say enough about it! There are apartments and there are newer modest neighborhoods and older homes, many gated communities like Pepper Tree Park and million dollar homes all over and in between! Hurts the better homes of course, but does wonders for the lesser ones. Silly town! Oh but Fallbrook's the Friendly Village, and the Avocado Capital of the World you know! So come and visit any time! Love to have ya! Come during the Avocado Festival, great fun!

Reason: too long! HAHA!
Interesting thread. After reading the whole thread, I think I see a trend. The people who move away from California and hate their new state are people who (a) are native Californians who have a lot of personal ties with friends and family still in California, or (b) are liberals who are offended by the conservative cultures of the states they moved to. Some posters made disparaging comments about conservative values and fly-over states. These people are probably the type of Californians that think they are superior and take their liberal California attitude with them to their new state. Which of course does not work and is giving the rest of the country a bad image of Californians.
The people who moved away and liked their new states seem to be more open about the positive aspects of their new state and less focused on where they had come from.
I currently live in NY (Long Island) to be exact. I have just returned from California where I spent a week in Redondo Beach. I am seriously considering making the move across country and relocating my family (wife and 3 kids). What I am seeking are cost of living insights. Such as how much to heat and cool a 3000 sq ft hm, electricity bills and anything else that I may have forgotten about. I am looking to move to the San Bernardino/Riverside area so I already have figured the home costs. Thanx in advance.

Riverside gets a lot hotter in the Summer than Redondo Beach and the Winters are colder too, but nowhere near what you're used to in NYC. Consider moving closer to the coast if you can afford it. The utility savings plus lack of commute might make up the difference.
I need to get back left one year exactly from now, living in Johnson County Kansas right now, originally from Orange/LA County. This place suck's, the weather, the food and the people it's just all crap. I keep telling myself I will get use to it but it's not going to happen, EVER.
I bought a cheap foreclosure here that I renovated and plan to pay off then collect. I renovated the whole thing tossed 15K into it. It needs another 4K in windows for me to rent out.
The day's here are getting harder and harder, lack of friends or people that understand me have drained me. I have a good job but it's nothing like my career in California. I have girlfriends here, but they don't come close to the girl I met in California that where from California. The environment here in Kansas is sterile.
I miss driving around, the scenery I would see in my truck. The people I would meet and I especially miss the food.
I miss home, I have now realized there are very few places I can survive in my lifetime. Long live the California dream that kept us there and made us call it home which it will always be home to me and have me crawling back.
Never again after I move back will I try another state. Biggest mistake I ever made.
Sincerely,
Anthony J.

Of course I could be wrong.
Your right, I am offended by your stupid old conservative culture of everyone marrying the girl next door. And I hate church & GOD, does he really do anything for you or do you just feel better walking into a random building.
And by the way dumb ass California has many conservative part's to it i.e. Orange County & San Diego County.
You need to stop watching fox news or whatever brainwashed you claiming California is EVIL.
Now go eat your oatmeal and enjoy your night old man, my generation doesn't care about yours. We are sick of your generation and will make sure you get no medicare.

Please don't bother coming back, sonny. And do learn when and when not to use the apostrophe.

Actually, Fontucky. I got a real chuckle at his blather and rudeness. Rickyy was right on in what he implied but didn't come right out and post. Very simply, people who move someplace out of ignorance and/or avarice without having visited first and researched thoroughly are just asking for failure. Having fallen flat on their faces they can only strike out at a place they chose to be and the people they chose to live among - the exception being when they are sent there by an employer and have no other choice but to quit. The latter is not a great idea in this economy. I think the poster will be miserable wherever he ends up, as will those who have to suffer his presence.
Lesson to those contemplating moves elsewhere: Know what you're getting yourself into before you find yourself in the middle of it!
