Not that there arent still people moving out, but many are moving back, as well.
Remember though, that no matter where you choose to live, if possible, try to have a job lined up FIRST, or at least a potential hopeful, and have a backup plan, just in case. Thats the most important factor.
PS: Whats wrong with Texas? I wouldnt mind living in a small town out there.

You brought up an excellent question: considering California's terrible problems (out of control illegals, budget, overcrowding, relatively high cost of living, etc)---------why are so many people eager to return? Leaving Michigan, etc. is a no brainer between its ghastly weather and worse economy but Arizona/New Mexico?
And; I can squawk: the Morongo Valley-29 Palms area is on my possible radar as well----------I was visiting there a couple of years ago and, I swear, Yucca Valley in particular is a time warp. It reminded me of SoCal of another era---------back when it was the best place to live in here in the USA.

As per some of my other posts: I have lived here in Arizona for almost 20 years now; and I hate to say it, but my adopted state has deteriorated greatly.
It is pretty damn sad when the average single family house in Riverside/San Berdoo counties is only 10% more expensive than one here in the Phx area.

Place to buy
Don't buy and move to towns that require long commutes - the next rise in gasoline will make commuting a total bear and hard to cover with two incomes. There are some wonderful cities for home prices - including Hemet and Temecula - but you need to find work in or very close to those cities - there is more localized commuting to Riverside and Palm Springs - but even that will be prohibitive when gasoline eventually creeps back to the $5 and up range - and we all know its coming. Hemet - houses that were selling 18 months ago in the upper $400,000 range are now $159,000-200,000.
People who bought 1 to 3 years ago and are seeing their values drop out - if you are in a fixed 30 year low interest loan - stay the course - the values will again rise - and if you don't have to move - juts make your home more comfortable and dig in - and wait for the next rise - it may not be until 2010-2012 - but if you don't have to move and have a low rate fixed rate mortgage - it doesn't matter if your value is lower than the owed mortgage - it will reverse in your favor again - give it time....and keep your credit rating intact and enjoy the home

Murrieta & Temecula are great areas and not all the pricey any more, there are lots of newer homes that went into forclosure that are in the low $200,000. I grew up in that area and am thinking of moving back now that prices are more reasonable. Fallbrook is ok but what I remember of it, it doesn't really compare to Murrieta & Temecula.

why would you guys want to move back?

Why did you want to move to Dallas? Everyone has their own reasons for wanting to move somewhere, let the OP feel the way they want to feel and move back to California. Just because you don't like it here doesn't mean others don't.

I feel most of us left SoCal thinking the grass was greener on the other side. Once relocated we realized that every town or state has it's own downfalls. It would have been so much easier to just cope with the realities I grew up with rather than have to adjust to a whole new culture. Live and learn...SoCal has the greenest grass I've ever seen! Be back soon.

It's true is very sad what's going on with real estate in Cali... I hope that things start to get better soon. But we still rather live in Cali than any where else, perhaps in the future we will feel differently...

We have been so homesick, and so miserable in this desolate winter hell called south east Idaho, that i am about to burst with excitement at the idea of moving back home!

Frankly; I am glad that the housing market corrected itself, when your 'worker bees' cannot afford to have housing within commute distance to their jobs--------that can/will cause a society to collapse.

I do like so cal, Just not a nice place to raise a family, remember I grew up there for 30 years
