Economically, the Coachella Valley relies almost entirely on tourists from Los Angeles, Orange County and the inner parts of the Inland Empire.

Sedona is split in between Yavapai and Coconino counties. I, personally, have always considered Sedona to have a stronger regional connection to Flagstaff than the Phoenix area.

Geographically, you could make a strong argument that the topography of the Coachella Valley warrants it being considered a separate region, I guess?

I suppose we're allowed our own mental definitions of these regions?
I don't consider the Coachella Valley part of the IE.

The only desert areas that I would consider in the Greater LA area are the Victor Valley(Victorville, Hesperia, Adelanto, Phelan, Apple Valley) and Antelope Valley (Lancaster&Palmdale)

The western reaches of the IE has always been and been increasingly so for middle class people from LA and OC to move to afford a house. The areas to the west of the 15 Freeway are already out of reach for many thus driving people further east. As the growth has continued more wealthy people have moved in, especially in areas like Corona and Upland which abut the more expensive counties.

What's interesting is the Spring Mountain Ranch new home community in Riverside, CA by KB Home is now officially more-expensive than Moreno Valley, CA and Rosena Ranch in San Bernardino, CA for the first time since mid-2019, very-surprisingly. Just north of 210 freeway at 15 freeway, some of the eastern cities offer to compete with one another (Rancho Cucamonga, Fontana, Rialto, and San Bernardino) with all new homes in safe neighborhoods.

By Car:

Sedona to Phoenix - 117 miles; 2 1/2 hours

Palm Springs to San Bernardino - 54 miles; 1 hour

The Coachella Valley is still its own separate area. Most if not all who live in the CV also work there, and have no reason to commute to the real IE

Yeah, I have friends in Palm Springs and they don't consider themselves part of the IE.

That has nothing to do with Geography and more to do with your friends' snootiness. They don't want to be associated with the Inland Empire. They consider themselves special.
