I lived in Ontario for 10 years and watched it progress a little. Personally, East of Mountain Ave is nice, but there are too, some nice areas between Mtn and Benson. I lived right around the corner from the cemetary and recently drove by the area. Sadly, a lot of the neighbourhood has gone 'downhill' in that section.

the one 1 is on a distinguished road
when i lived in ontario i was off holt...when i lived there the area around bellvue cemetary was already pretty downhill..this was the late 90s...alot of the G'z from south ontario moved up there to escape the police heat etc that was constant in south ontario(south of holt)

imo mountain doesnt get very nice until u get up to about4th or 5th street where the big abandoned building is at that used to be a trget and food 4 less...

for years the worst street in the city was b street west of mountain now called stoneridge court..they've cleaned it up alot now tho but theres still alot of crime over there...

I grew up in this area (I grew up in Upland. which is just north of Ontario), but now live in Orange County because of my job. My parents now live in Rancho Cucamonga. But, I would say if you are going to live in Ontario, try to stay to the parts of Ontario closer to Upland or Rancho Cucamonga.

Ontario is great even when you live in the "crummy" areas I live in front of Bon View park. I have since I was five. I have never seen any gang activity. The weather is very nice and we are about an hour away from everywhere. Public transportation is reliable. And yes you will see the occasional hooker on Holt, but I have never had any problems with them. I actually became friend with one of the "girls". The library is great a right next to La Verne. You can get an apartment for less than 500 on Euclid above the businesses. I had a cousin who lived above a coffee shop. They are not all good so make sure you look at all of the buildings.

So what area would be closest to the school? also safe and not super expensive? I hope to get a one bedroom.

The traffic is so horrible here in dc metro area but I guess I wont be able to escape it there. oh well I will trade better weather for no traffic improvement.
I have lived in NoVA and was raised not too far from Ontario (well that isn't quite true) I spent a lot of time near Ontario. The traffic, if you stay in the LaVerne, Claremont area isn't as bad as going into DC or NoVa. I know, for some that doesn't seem possible but it is true or about true. It won't be any worse.

If I were going to LaVerne, I don't think I would move to Ontario. I would stay closer to LaVerne/Claremont, but the cities, like those in NoVa just run together. The thing about LaVerne is you will be closer to the mountains and will have a chance to spend more time with the university crowd.

I think you are going to find the prices for apartments similar but they may be a little higher. Upland is another really nice area. I know those who live in Ontario think it is great and i am not here to start another war, but I would check some of the surrounding areas before consentrating on Ontario.

Good luck,

Nita

Oh good lord.

Ontario is NOT a suburb of San Bernardino or Riverside. It was incorporated as a city in 1891.
Back in the 1960's if you drove the 10 Freeway there used to be 15 to 20 miles of fields and vineyards between Ontario and SB and even more miles between Ontario and Riverside.

I think the nicest city in San Bernardino county is Rancho Cucamonga. It's not just because I live here, but it's truely the nicest. I can't really think of a bad part of Rancho C, but in most other cities in the county, there are good & crummier parts.

Even for a 1 bedroom apt, be prepared to pay about $900 - 1150/mo for rent. (Just for comparison, the city of RC's rent is about $1000 - $1450/mo).

<----What this poster says. Its true. I lived there for 10 years but it does still have its ups and its downsides, like any other city/town. I wouldnt want to live there again now. Expensive nowadays, even with this recession nothing has budged price-wise.

Ontario is known to have quite a few gang activity, of course it all depends what area of Ontario. Some areas are beautiful with victorian type home and the streets are shady and cozy.....Good luck to you.
