A friend of mine in San Bernardino county has been unemployed for 1 year & 3 mos now & is growing more frustrated by the week. His skills are in the warehouse & pest control industries. He's applied everywhere he can think of, looked on job websites, been to as many job fairs as possible, & signed on w/ the employment & temp agencies, but even they don't call him for any work. For whatever reason, he can't get unemployment insurance. He can't even seem to get a job at a fast food place! He's never been out of work this long.

I've run out of ideas of what to tell him to do. Is it really that horrible out there to get a job? He's never going to give up looking, but it's looking very, very bleak out there.

Any comments, ideas, suggestions, etc. would greatly be appreciated!!!

Yup!! It's that bad. I finally found a job (ok I guess I only graduated in Sept.) I commute from Moreno Valley to Torrance. I'm moving to downtown Long Beach next month. I would suggest telling him to look west. Right now is not the best time for logistics. Pest control is actually a great time. Tell him to contact any city hall to work with vector control. Lake Elsinore, for example, is in demand for vector control specialists, due to the high foreclosure rate. I would try Lake Elsinore, Fontana, Moreno Valley, Corona, Murietta, Wildomar, Perris, Temecula, Highland, and Yucaipa since areas have high concentrations of pools and foreclosures.

How old is he?
If he cant get a job at a fast food place it sounds like he is over 40. That's a tough age to get a job anywhere doing anything. Older folks think for themselves, most employers want mindless robots to just do what they are told.

I guess I agree somewhat to that. But, morseo I'd think that if anyone needs a job, no matter how overqualified they are & are willing to settle for making minimum wage, they'd be hired in a second at a fast food place. BTW, he's approaching mid-30s.

The only growth areas I can think of are Medical and Security/Law Enforcement.

Law enforcement is a career if he has a clean DMV print out and can pass a background and drug test... just a thought.

Trust me, its tough everywhere right now, not just in Calif. I know of people back in Az with degrees who have been out of work for several months, and a friend out in Boston whose brother is computer tekkie, who too, is struggling, his former company let him go because he was too good and he was making more than they were able to pay him, so they let go of a few of the highest paid employees. Cant win for losing I guess. Have you tried going through an agency, sometimes they can help get a foot in the door.

If one can't get a job & still has bills, etc., what are they to do?! Then, as each day comes, the news tells of more people being let go from their jobs.

Lots of options...

The best is having a skill that is in demand...

Absent that, what about retraining or learning a skill?

We recently hired a highly qualified network engineer that was in the exact same position. She was born and raised in a small town with very limited job opportunities and had little money to move and get a better education.

She said the best thing she ever did was enlist in the military... she learned a trade on the Navy's dime and was able to save most of her earnings... she also banked a re-enlistment bonus on her last tour.

Or what about starting your own business?

Take the test to become a Licensed Pest Control Operator... what about Landscaping, Trash Hauling or relocating to a place with better prospects?

What do you like to do? Try and make it a career.

My friend has zero savings. He's got so much to do before he can even start saving for a home & family life.
