Redlands has a fun farmer's market every Thursday night...lots of teenagers around, but if they don't bother you, it's fun for kids, you can get some great deals on yummy produce, there's live music. It's more low key in the winter, but in the summer it's practically a street fair. We live in San Bernardino near Cal State, but drive to Redlands nearly every Thursday night in the summer for the farmer's market. My 4.5 year old loves it!

Looking at rental housing, there seems to be a bit more uniqueness in Redlands and cost isn't too much different. I was mostly worried about the commute but 15-20 minutes doesn't seem too bad. Our kids are probably gonna be home-schooled for the year so that doesn't make too much difference. It seems like there may be more activities for them to partake in in Redlands (Smiley Library, Redlands Bowl, etc.)
How long does it take to get through the rental process. Do I need to come out a month in advance to settle things or can I get it done in a week or so?

It depends on where you are looking...when we rented this house we're in now, it was vacant and we could have moved in a week if we wanted to. But we were in a lease at our townhouse...the owners let us wait three weeks before moving.
The best thing would be to start looking at listings a month or two before you move and start calling the places you are interested in.

Redlands also has the outdoor plays at Prospect Park during summer. I drive down and meet my friends and we have a little picnic dinner and some wine out on the lawn while we watch whatever play they are featuring.

Yeah... my screen name pretty much says my opinion, but... Anyway, Redlands is the better of the two. From what I have heard and researched, some very upscales stores are coming to Redlands. Redlands is relatively expensive (especially Crafton: 6.5 million for a home?!), so the following stores might or might not interest you:
Apple (almost certain)
P.F. Changs (likely)
William Sonoma (very likely)
BMW (likely)
Ruth's Chris Steakhouse (somewhat unlikely)
Cheesecake Factory (almost certain)
Nordstrom's (very likely)
There is also a very well spread rumor that there is an expensive auto outlet center coming to Redlands, which could include Mercedes Benz, Aston Martin, and Lamborghini (OMG!). The MB is unverified. Aston Martin is looking for another S. California location, especially one to accommodate the increasingly wealthy Inland Empire. Lamborghini is seeking a location to replace the Orange County Location which closed in a fraud.
The thing is, R.C has most of these stores, but Redlands could host these stores with style. Also, Redlands is overall more affluent and luxurious (with the exception of the North Side), but does have more traffic despite it being less crowded. If you want an old (even New England?) style Inland Empire City, Redlands is undoubtedly your better choice. If you like a more modern, busy city, R. Cucamonga is better.

I'm a native of Redlands, and I'm glad to see some stores on their way here (thanks for the info, redlandsca). I'm in shock over Gottschalk's closing, I hope something nice comes to the mall, not more of the junky stores that are already there.
