How about Crestline vs Running Springs? I keep hearing about all of the "meth addicts" in Crestline etc. And I have heard that RUnning Springs also is not that great. But I am not sure how bad it really is? I am also moving back. I used to live in Lake Arrowhead, and then Rim Forest in the 70's. Is Running Springs better than Crestline for crime, or about the same? Are they even bad? I have 3 kids, and I do want to try and keep them around kids that are better and not into trouble if possible. We are in FL now, and eventhough our neighborhood is quite and mostly older people, and middle class, some of the kids and way the parents let them run all over, bothers me. How they parent, affects our kids. So, I am not looking to move into another problem area. But it seems that finding a fenced yard, and the commute would be easier in Crestline and RUnning Springs than in Lake Arrowhead? Any help is appreciated! THX

I just moved from Lake Arrowhead and I never had or saw any problems in Running Springs or Crestline. Sure, there's meth stuff, but that's everywhere. The area is MUCH better than San B down the hill and I loved it there. My friend lives by herself in crestline and gets along just fine. Lake Gregory is still beautiful!

Hi featherz! Great! Thank you. It all seems to be in perception, because lots of people have said it is bad. But then others say it is the same as Lake Arrowhead etc. I have also heard people say it about Twin Peaks. Yes, I would be worried to live in San B. I remember at Lake Gregory, my grandma taking me to the waterslide in the 70's, and it is still there now!

I lived in Crestline from 1977 to 1983. Back then it was starting to change from a family community and people complained how much it was changing. I loved the summers there, IMHO, best summers in the USA. However; the winters were a different story. 1977/78 winter 100 inches of rain, 1979/80 winter 100 inches of snow. 1980 or 81 we had the fires in November at Thanksgiving time. Those people who left mountain to shop could not get back up. We were stuck on the mountain. The fog was terrible in the winter and never again will I ever want to live in fog like that again. We had to use a flash light sometimes to see the white line while driving up the mountain. San Bernardino was a slum back then and I hated to go there to shop and now it is even worse.
I still have friends who reside in Crestline but most of them I knew moved away...due to the winters.
Drugs are everywhere.

Thanks!
Hi Havasulady!
Thank you! I actually lived in Rimforest when you went through the Panorama fire. I remember that well. I was a child though. I wonder if the other communities are as bad with the drugs up there etc. I have visited many times, and I agree about San Bernardino. But the last time that I visited was in 2001. The fog, I also agree. But there is something about the mountain that I miss terribly. I have heard so many bad things about Crestline though, But then the people that live there say that they love it and that all of this crime and drugs is everywhere. The same thing with Running Springs and Twin Peaks. I hear bad things, and then the people love it there and say it is not bad?

The houses 'up the hill' are less expensive often than their counterparts down the hill. That in and of itself can attract the 'bad element' but I found that the mountain areas were for the most part very nice. I think the winters and the commute will keep out most of the gangbangers, etc.
You see rows of nice well kept houses and there's 'that one' where either it's a huge slob in residence or a meth house or whatever. But it really IS for the most part nice. I liked the winters, although the fires were NO fun and I had to evacuate twice in five years for almost two weeks. The only thing I didn't like would be the quality of 'services' up the mountain - anyone you called to show up at your house would be on 'mountain time' meaning they MIGHT show up.. someday. Oh, and the no home mail delivery and the fun of trying to get orders to the right address (they send USPS to your street address when you thought it was UPS, etc).

You know if you feel you will like it, you will be fine living in Crestline. You can see the neighborhoods and what they have to offer. Stay away from VOE.

Living in the mountain communities
I've lived in Crestline for 5 years. I thought about Running Springs but during the winter, if it snows, Running Springs will get the most of it. Beautiful but difficult to deal with daily. Usually the heavy fog is on Highway 18 and in top town not in the canyon, so whether you're going to Running Springs or Crestline, if you're on the 18, you'll hit fog. Most of the time it's clear though. If you can find a house with garage, that's a big plus up here!
Don't use your brights, fog is like a mirror, you'll be able to see less. You want to keep your regular headlights on though so any car can see you either behind you or opposite traffic, drive slower, and follow the center divider. There have only been a few time where the fog has been appox. 5ft. visability for me personally and following those rules still got me home safe. I would suggest fog lights if you decide to move to any of the mountain communities. With fog lights you'll see a lot further and it will be a lot safer for you and those around you. With fog lights, don't be suprised if you're being followed closely by someone who can't see the road clearly.
The communities up here are low on crime, family originated, and pull together as one to perserve the beauty and enjoyment of living up here.
If you decide to move here, I'm sure you'll never look back.

Can someone please give me some personal experience with Crestline and possbily advise me as to what part of the mountain (even if it's in Running Springs) that would be less likely have such heavy heavy fog. I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you
