Gang Activity On The Decline?
How do the following areas rate in terms of active gang activity and the "fear factor" in living there?
~ Moreno Valley (92557)
~ San Bernardino (92404)
~ Lake Elsinore
~ San Jacinto
~ Cabazon
~ Palmdale
Do you see any of these areas getting better or worse in the next 5-years, given an optimistic view of a decent economy?

I can only tell you about 92557...there is one "gang" but really it's a bunch of high schoolers tagging on the sidewalk. The Sunnymead Ranch Riders. It's safe. On a summer evening you will see little old ladies walk on the jogging trails (there are TONS in this part of town...Sunnymead Ranch, Hidden Springs, and Shadow Mountain all have their own community trails). It's a nice place to call home.
92557 will remain the same. The area has aged very well. Some houses are 40/50 years old and look better than they did new. My parent's house looks a lot nicer now than brand new (it's roughly 30 years old.) The trees are really mature in this area. The NW end of town is an established area. We did not see nearly the amount of forclousures as 92555 (much newer). The last major new development in this area was back in 1999-2003 with Shadow Mountain (before things got out of hand). With that said, I'm talking about the heart of 92557, excluding the area closest to the freeway. This is not a horrible area, but it's different than the rest of 92557.

I lived in 92404 area code next to valley college. The only problem I had was learning spanish to buy groceries. There are a lot of Mexican immigrants who are very simple and kind people. You do have the thugs that roam the streets, but mined your own business and dont flash anything you dont want to loose.

I can tell you that the Hemet and San Jacinto Valley's are infested with gang activity and crime. Just a couple of weeks ago there was a double homicide in San Jacinto that was gang related. Just before that a long-time store clerk was gunned down on the job during a robbery in Hemet. Having grown up in these areas I can tell you that things have gone down hill in terms of crime and safety. We now have prostitutes that regularly work Florida Ave. Gang-bangers and their wanna-bee's always seem to be lurking around the corners and do their best to intimidate everyone. We still have a great deal of senior citizens around here and it is sad to see them fear a community they once loved. There have been numerous "bodies" discovered out by the Soboba Casino but the citizens of our valley still choose to support the tribe by dumping their hard earned money into their slots and gaming tables. So, to answer your question...I don't see San Jacinto or Hemet improving any in the next 5 years. Let's just hope it doesn't get any worse!

i grew up in the 92404 zipcode, and my parents still live there. there is alot of crime in that area, and i would not recommend the area. i see the area getting worse with time. there isnt any work there and since they closed norton airforce base, the area is further depressed economiucally. if you need to be in san bernardino, stay close to cal state san bernardino. last xmas, there was a murder on my parents street. their home, and many others in the neighborhood, has been burglarized more than twice in the 20 years they have lived there. cars must be parked in the garage for them to be safe. kids shouldnt play outside unsupervised. the houses are mostly ranch style and have the potential to make lovely homes, but the hoodlums have taken away any ounce of pride in ownership. i cant wait to move my parents out of there. cant imagine them growing old there!!!

I agree w/jazmin22
Everything went south after closure of Norton AFB. Even the really nice shopping places. The mall shut down. It was a shame how the "better" grocery stores were replaced with mini-mexican marts. The Food for Less is packed with low income shoppers and the Stater Brothers is pricey due to the theft. There are alot of apartments and renters. People that own houses are alot less than renters and thugs, felons and other criminals are a dime a dozen. This includes Illegals- not just hispanics also. 92404 is definetly a NO-GO. There is a new mayor, but I don't see this area improving anytime soon. Too many people that do not work, hanging out, grown ups riding kids bikes and lots of street walkers, not exactly alot of police patrols either. Your car or your house can be vandalized while other neightbors pretend not to see a thing. Drugs and gangs- its terrible. They trespass even if your fence is locked. If you have enough money....go somewhere safe. I still live here because I dont make enough money to afford to move. I hate it. Laws only seem to work for those of us who follow them. San Bernardino is filled with convict & criminals.

It is so unbelievable to me that the majority of San Bernardino county is off limits because of this crime element, unless you go to some areas at the fringes of the county south or toward Barstow.
Was this always like this and why does it remain to be so despite it being clear as day and a big problem? San Bernardino has such a magnificent mountain range and the older parts of it have the potential of being great communities. It seems like a lost cause.
Is Lake Elsinore/Wildomar any better?

Lake Elsinore/Wildomar are dramatically better. Not the *best* cities but they are nice enough. Wildomar moreso than Lake Elsinore but LE isn't THAT bad. LE benefits from proximity to OC. Both LE and Wildomar have much clearer skies than SB and newer/nicer housing.
