My husband and I are both heavy equipment mechanics in New Mexico wanting to live closer to family that is in Canyon Lake and San Diego areas. I might have a potential job offer that is on the outskirts of San Bernardino at a rock and asphalt company.
I have heard nothing but bad about SB and the last time I drove through there on 15, there was a horrendous amount of smog . If we do move, what area(s) are the safest.
Yes, we have to take the good with the bad. NM is fairly affordable and cheaper to live, but costs us a lot to visit family in Cal, Nev, Ore and Wa... Trade offs, you know?
What about Hesperia or other cities nearby? We don't have any kids, so "good schools" aren't really an issue, but safe neighborhoods and reasonable commutes are.
Thanks for your help and advice.

Depending on what the "outskirts" are I would look in Yucaipa, or to be closer to San Diego and Canyon Lake I would look in Corona, the newer part.

I guess what I mean by outskirts is that the address I have for this potential job lists it in San Bernardino, but when I look it up on Google maps, it shows it being in Rialto.

Well there are some nice neighborhoods in north San Berdoo, up past Cal Sate San Bndo. My daughter goes to school there and lives off campus and she says she feels safe where she's at. You can also look at a small town called Devore which is just a little further north. Very quiet area where people have horses and such but it can get hairy when it rains hard. The nice thing about these areas is it's fairly easy and quick to get to Rialto. BTW I hope you like wind because you will get some in Rialto!

I think I know where that rock company is. If it is the one on highland then you would probably drive up State st to get home in the north end. North San Bernardino is not so bad. It is the only area to live in in San bernardino. I would check out the north west part of town. Palm and Kendall area, which is sometimes refered to as Verdemont and University heights. Devore is also good but it can get expensive up there because it is horse property. Near Cal State is good especially anything on or near Northpark ave. Pretty much stay above 30th or even 40th streets in San berdo.

I will look into those areas mentioned. We're going to be flying into San Diego from Tucson in a couple of weeks. My husband has an interview in Foothill Ranch, which I know is a long ways away from San Bernardino! But we'll probably cruise around and see what's out there.
