Default Thoughts on Upland?

We are looking to relocate to California from the East Coast and heard that Upland is a really nice, affordable area with good schools and great neighborhoods. Can anyone give me any info on the area and also, what the weather is like? I know it will be different from L.A., but how much different temperature and rain-wise?

Thanks!!!

Maureen

I can't give you much info, since I've never lived there, but did previously spend six months living in nearby Rancho Cucamonga.

Upland is very nice, the area around Euclid Avenue is especially memorable for me (think tall trees and nice, old homes, with Baldy towering over you). It's more affordable than most cities just west of it, and has an amazing view of the aforementioned Mount Baldy and the San Gabriel Mountains.

Climate
Summer: Highs: low 90's to mid 100's, Lows: upper 60's to low 80's, virtually no precipitation
Fall: Highs: upper 70's to mid 90's, Lows: mid 50's to low 70's, windy, fire season
Winter: Highs: upper 50's to mid 70's, Lows: upper 20's (rare), to upper 40's, relatively rainy
Spring: Highs: low 70's to low 90's, Lows: low 50's to mid 60's.

The area gets around 15-20 inches of rain per year, with at least half of it falling during the winter months. Getting a dusting of snow would be a very freak occurrence and would be more likely to happen the further north you'd be, but wouldn't even be something to think/worry about.

Thanks for your reply David! I love snow, so "worrying" about it is not something I would do haha! That will be the only thing I miss about the East coast.

Hi there , you will find newer bigger houses above Foothill blvd in Upland (old route 66), south of Foothill it's more Victorian style, some are 100 years old , the higher you go towards the mountains the newer the housing is and more expensive, Upland unified School district is very good, you have also a handful of private schools too. google Upland maps

I grew up in Upland. Very pleasant place to live. The schools are great, the community has a relatively low crime rate. The nicer parts of Upland are north of Foothill Boulevard. The weather- well it can get hot and dry when the Santa Ana winds are blowing. Upland is on the foothills of the San Gabriel mountains, so unfortunately, there can be smog trapped in. Rainy season, if you can call it usually runs from December to March. The pace of life is different from LA, though LA is only about 40 miles to the west. Upland is very suburban. I actually think I was fortunate to have grown up in Upland.

You all have been great! I actually prefer the older homes and didn't think there were too many out in California. All I am finding are the "cookie cutter" newer homes mostly that all look the same inside oand out with no character whatsoever. They are still really nice, and I would definately purchase one, but I would love to get into an older Victorian/craftsman/colonial style home if that was possible. How much rain is usually present during the rainy season? It rains on the east coast at least 2x's per week, sometimes less, sometimes more, but that is on average.

Upland is great for the older homes, as is nearby Ontario.

It rains about 2.5-3.0 inches per month in Dec, Jan, and Feb. It'll be nothing compared to what you are used to.

I grew up in the area.

The older homes can be a bit pricey, since there are so few of them and they are close to downtown. So even though that area of Upland is more dangerous, the homes are pricey because of their historic value.

Many homes in Upland were built after 1950 and most were built after 1960. Upland is a pricey area. My parents live there above Foothill (above 16th, actually). If you like the suburbs, you'll be OK. Personally I am a cultural city type and can't stand the burbs. I grew up in the California burbs and hope never to go back.

There are a lot of snobs in Upland. If you have kids, they will either make friends with the rich kids, or hang with the "poor" kids. In Upland, there isn't much in-between. But that's becoming true everywhere. Upland's OK if you're a soccer mom and have an SUV. Otherwise, good luck fitting in and/or finding friends to hang with. It's upwardly mobile suburban living.

Maureen, where will the job or jobs be located. If you will be going to Los Angeles to work Upland is a heck of a long commute. That being said, yes, it is a wonderful family area. The temps will be higher in the summer and a little lower in the winter than Los Angeles. The biggest problem may be smog. The further inland you go in So California the more smog you will have.

If you think the smog isn't going to bother you, I certainly would consider the area. Claremont which is next door as well as San Dimas, Glendora and La Verne are other areas to consider.

Nita
